Volleyball opens BIG EAST play Friday at Villanova

MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's volleyball team begins BIG EAST Conference action on Friday evening at Villanova before a Saturday matinee at Georgetown.
The Golden Eagles will face the Wildcats at 6 p.m. Central time Friday at Jake Nevin Field House and head to Washington, D.C. for a 3 p.m. CT match against Georgetown at McDonough Arena.
Friday's match at VU will air live on FloSports and Sunday's contest will be available through GUHoyas.com.
MARQUETTE (9-2): The Golden Eagles wrapped up a perfect 3-0 weekend in the Marquette Invitational with sweeps of UTSA, Wright State and UNI at the Al McGuire Center. Middle blocker Savannah Rennie was named tournament most valuable player after posting a .481 hitting percentage (29-4-52) with an average of 3.22 kills and 1.44 blocks per set. Setter Claire Mosher also earned the first all-tournament honors of her career while helping the Golden Eagles to a .332 hitting percentage with 15.00 kills per frame. Mosher averaged 5.22 assists and 1.56 digs per set for the weekend.
Entering BIG EAST play, Rennie leads the league in both hitting percentage (.364) and blocks (1.46/set) and the Golden Eagles lead the conference in both categories at .272 with 2.76 blocks per set.
Marquette opens its 17th year of BIG EAST play this weekend and is 11-5 overall in conference openers with a mark of 3-4 when those matches are held on the road.
VILLANOVA (8-4): The Wildcats have won five of their last six matches, taking 15 of 23 sets throughout that span. Five players are averaging at least two kills per set, with outside hitter Riley Homer averaging a team-high 3.81. As a squad, Villanova is hitting .231 on the season and has eclipsed that percentage in seven of its first 12 matches. The Wildcats are coming off back-to-back wins in the Temple Tournament but dropped a match to Princeton in the tournament opener. Despite only having dropped four matches on the season, Villanova was swept in all four losses.

SERIES WITH VILLANOVA: The Golden Eagles and Wildcats have squared off 18 times previously and Marquette has taken 14 of those matches. The two squads last met on Nov. 29, 2019, and MU came away with a 3-0 sweep in the BIG EAST tournament semifinals.

GEORGETOWN (4-7): The Hoyas have dropped their last four matches and face DePaul on Friday before their afternoon contest with the Golden Eagles on Saturday. Three of those losses came in the Jefferson Cup, where Georgetown hit .142 on the weekend. Freshman Mary Grace Goyena has tallied 131 kills in 44 sets this season to lead GU with a 2.98 kills per set average. Georgetown also features sophomore middle blocker Chanelle Smith, who has recorded a team-high 49 total blocks through non-conference action.

SERIES WITH GEORGETOWN: Marquette has taken 15 of the 19 all-time matches between the two programs. MU last saw Georgetown on Nov. 15, 2019 and defeated the Hoyas in four sets at the Al McGuire Center.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles return to the Al McGuire Center for their BIG EAST home opener next weekend and their first match against UConn since 2013.
