Eichhorn led after two rounds and finished the tournament at 11-under par
LITCHFIELD PARK, Arizona - Marquette University graduate student Hunter Eichhorn tied for third place at The Patriot All-America Invitational on Dec. 29-31 at The Wigwam Arizona.
The Carney, Michigan native posted an opening-round 67 and followed that up with a 7-under 63 in the second round, tying eventual tournament champion Connor Howe of Georgia Tech (third round) for the tournament low. He shot a 1-under 69 in the final round on New Year's Eve to finish four strokes off the pace.
"I got off to a little bit of a slow start, but I kind of got the putter hot and started to hit some good shots, and it all came together," said EichhornĀ following his second round that tied a tournament low. "[Tomorrow] I need to go out, have fun, be aggressive when I can, try to make some birdies and try to avoid making any mistakes."
Embracing the tradition of a holiday bowl game experience for top golfers, the Patriot All-America Invitational invited a talented field of players to benefit the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides scholarships and assistance to the spouses and children of those killed or disabled in armed service.Ā
Throughout the tournament, EichhornĀ carried a bag emblazoned with the name of U.S. Army Captain Lowell T. Miller III of Flint, Michigan. Miller was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 155th Infantry Regiment, Mississippi National Guard based out of McComb, Mississippi. On Aug. 331, 2005, while serving during Operation Iraqi Freedom, CPT Miller was killed when his military team, which was conducting operations with the Iraqi Army, came under attack by enemy forces using small arms in Iskandariyah, Iraq.
Eichhorn also competed in the event the last two times it was held, in both 2018 and 2019. In 2019 he carried the bag ofĀ U.S. Army Sergeant Paul J. AtimĀ of Green Bay, Wisconsin, who was assigned to 1st Battalion, 32ndĀ Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division based in Fort Drum, New York and served during Operation Enduring Freedom. On April 17, 2011, SGT Atim, 27, and two other soldiers were killed when insurgents attacked their unit with an improvised explosive device in Ahmid-Khan, Afghanistan.
At the 2018 event, Eichhorn's Marquette-branded bag had the name of Major Nicholas Ferencz III, a 1985 Marquette University graduate and Naval ROTC Unit member who was killed during a training exercise air collision on Sept. 11, 2000 at the Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma, Arizona.Ā
EichhornĀ is a four-time PING All-Region selection and a two-time BIG EAST Conference Player of the Year and tournament medalist. During the fall season, he recorded five rounds in the 60s and 11 rounds of par-or-better. He also paced MU at each of its final final three events of the fall is MU's career scoring leader.
