Former men’s golfer honored for his success in athletics, scholarship and service
MILWAUKEE – Former Marquette University men's golfer Hunter Eichhorn is the recipient of the 76th Robert L. and William P. McCahill Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a Marquette student-athlete.
He will be honored at the Marquette men's basketball game against UConn (6 p.m.) at Fiserv Forum on Wednesday, Jan. 11.
Eichhorn is the third men's golfer to earn the award and the first since Mike Van Sickle received it in 2009.
"Within an athletics program that is as tradition-rich as Marquette's, it's rare that a current student-athlete can be talked about as one of the best in the history of his or her respective program. But that's the case with Hunter," said Marquette Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Scholl. "It has been a privilege to watch his career unfold during his time at Marquette. We ask a lot of our student-athletes and Hunter answered the call in every way. In the classroom, in the community, and on the golf course, Hunter represented Marquette at the highest level. It is only fitting that he join the ranks of the great Marquette student-athletes who have been honored with the McCahill Award."
Eichhorn is one of the most decorated golfers and athletes to come through Marquette. He is the program's all-time leader in rounds played (142), counting scores (total and pct.), rounds of par-or-better (90) and career scoring average (71.38). Eichhorn also holds the single-round low score at MU with an 11-under par 61 (Feb. 15, 2022). Additionally, Eichhorn ranks top three in the program in birdies (519), Eagles (20), wins (6) and finish percentage (85.2%).
"This is an amazing and well-deserved honor for Hunter," said men's head golf coach Steve Bailey. "I couldn't be more proud of the man he has become and more importantly the journey he has traveled to get there."
Eichhorn's success on the course garnered him both conference and national awards. The Carney, Michigan native was a four-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection and a three-time BIG EAST Player of the Year. Eichhorn made four appearances at the NCAA Regionals and was named to the PING All-Midwest Region team five times.
"Born and raised in a town of 190 people in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Hunter is a soft-spoken leader and a fierce competitor, who embraced a gritty, find-a-way attitude," said Bailey.
In the classroom, Eichhorn graduated in 2021 with a bachelor's degree in corporate communications with a 3.22 GPA. He earned BIG EAST All-Academic Team honors and was the recipient of the BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award for men's golf (2020-21, 2021-22). Eichhorn earned his graduate certificate in sports leadership from the business school with a 4.0 GPA.
Off the course, Eichhorn helped with golf clinics for local youths at the BIG EAST Championships and the Wounded Warrior Project. He also spent his time working with elementary students at the Milwaukee Academy of Science. Eichhorn also volunteered at the annual Blue & Gold Fund Auction to help raise money for MU Athletics.
"Knowing what this award embodies, I have no doubt the McCahill family would be proud of Hunter and all he stands for," said Bailey.
