O'Grady set a record for goals in an MU debut with four at Bellarmine
NEW YORK – Marquette University attackman Bobby O'Grady is the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
O'Grady set a Marquette record for a player in their NCAA debut with four goals, including the triple overtime winner, at Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon. He scored his first goal to give MU a 4-3 lead midway through the second quarter and added a pair of scores in the third as MU built a 7-6 lead with 7:51 left in the frame. His extra time winner occurred with 2:55 on the clock in the third overtime period and he also picked up a pair of ground balls.
The native of Milton, Massachusetts is the third MU player to record a hat trick in their debut - only the second freshman - and his four points are the third-most in a debut program history.
Sophomore attackman Russell Melendez was also honored for his play with mention on the league's weekly honor roll. Melendez posted new career highs of six points and five assists against the Knights. The Severna Park, Maryland native provided helpers on five of MU's six assisted goals on Saturday including O'Grady's game winner.
Melendez posted a total of 11 points (seven goals, four assists) as a true freshman last spring and his five assists on Saturday more than doubled his career total of four entering the game.
The Golden Eagles continue non-conference action on Saturday at 11 a.m. Central time against No. RV/15 Jacksonville at Rock Stadium.
