Forward led Wolf Pack to NAIA National Championship in 2021-22
The Marquette University men's basketball team has added former Loyola University New Orleans forward Zach Wrightsil to the 2022-23 roster, head coach Shaka Smart announced Monday afternoon.
Wrightsil (6-7, 205) arrives in Milwaukee after spending the last four seasons at Loyola New Orleans, highlighted by a 37-1 record in 2021-22 en route to a national title. He will officially arrive on campus this summer and have one season of eligibility with the Golden Eagles.
"I'm extremely excited about Zach joining our program," Smart said. "He is a flat-out winner who possesses tremendous humility and poise. As we continue to build our program culturally, Zach will provide leadership and maturity.
"On the court, Zach's versatility and ability to play with violence will be a welcomed addition to our team," Smart added.
The Wolf Pack won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championship in 2021-22. Wrightsil was named the NAIA Player of the Year after contributing 18.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 3.6 assist per outing, while starting each of the team's 38 outings. He became Loyola's all-time leader for points (2,104), rebounds (1,065) and assists (480). He was also named First Team NAIA All-America, Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Year (SSAC), first team all-conference and selected to the NAIA National Championship All-Tournament Team.
As a junior in 2020-21, Wrightsil started in all 21 of Loyola's games, leading the Wolf Pack to the NAIA National Championship quarterfinals and playing in a team-high 34.9 minutes per game. He averaged 17.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.1 blocks per game. Wrightsil was named Second Team All-America by the NAIA, SSAC First Team All-Conference, Louisiana Sports Writers Association Third Team All-Louisiana and selected to the NAIA National Championship All-Tournament Team.Â
A four-year letterwinner at Loyola, he started in 123 of his 126 career appearances. He played both basketball and football at Prosper High School in Prosper, Texas, and was an all-district, all-region and all-state honoree.
Â
Wrightsil is the fourth newcomer to the program for the 2022-23 campaign, joining prep standouts Ben Gold (Wellington, New Zealand/NBA Global Academy), Sean Jones (Gahanna, OH/Lincoln HS) and Chase Ross (Dallas, TX/Cushing Academy).
