Annual event recognizes MU's top team and individual accomplishments
Student athletes from Marquette University were honored at the annual Blue & Golden Globes awards on Sunday night at Discovery World in celebration of the 2021-22 athletics and academic year.
The highlights of the night were the Ralph H. Metcalfe, Sr. awards, given out in three categories: outstanding athlete, leadership and service and scholar-athlete.
Men's golfer Hunter Eichhorn earned the male outstanding athlete accolade, while Hope Werch was bestowed the women's title.
Eichhorn, a graduate student on the golf team, is a two-time BIG EAST Player of The Year and four-time All-BIG EAST First Team selection. He has three individual NCAA regional appearances, and was a 2019-20 All-America Honorable Mention.
Werch leaves Marquette volleyball as the program's all-time leader in service aces, fifth in kills and eighth in digs. A three-time All-BIG EAST selection and one-time All-American, Werch is the only player in MU history with 1,000 kills, 1,000 digs and 100 service aces. The graduate student will serve as an assistant volleyball coach at Bradley University next season.
Zach Granger, a redshirt junior on the men's lacrosse teams, was the male recipient of the leadership and service award. A 2021 All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, Granger has taken an active role in SHAPE since arriving at Marquette and has coordinated outreach to injured athletes. A captain for the MLAX team, Granger has been instrumental in conversations about mental and physical health, serving as a liaison to athletics training staff about teammate injuries and authoring an essay about isolation during the pandemic.
Madison Burrier and Maddie Monticello, both women's soccer players, are the female leadership and service award winners.
Burrier, the SAAC VP for service, has coordinated book reading with SHARP literacy for all of athletics, as well as the Rescue Mission drive in the fall to provide resources before the holidays. The senior defender was selected for the NCAA Career in Sport Forum and has served as a student facilitator in the LEAD program for over three years. Next year, Burrier will be working at the NCAA as a leadership development intern.
Monticello, a graduate student and student advisor to SAAC, has been an active member of student-athlete affairs since arriving on campus. She represented Marquette at the BIG EAST Mental Health Summit and was an attendee of the Puerto Rico service trip in 2019. Monticello was a LEAD program facilitator for more than three years and formerly served as the SAAC VP for service.
Patrick Burns and Adelaide Havens were bestowed the scholar athlete awards, given to the highest male and female GPA.
Burns, a member of the track and field and cross country teams, graduated magna cum laude in 2021 with a major in data science and minor in information systems. He is currently pursuing a masters of science in data science, specializing in machine learning, while being heavily involved in SHAPE.
Havens is a double major in political science and history with a minor in Spanish language, literature and culture. A track and field athlete, Havens has served as a peer mentor in the MAGIS mentor program and volunteers as an election worker, all while studying for the LSAT with the intention of law school in the fall of 2023.
The SAAC Awards were also given out at the banquet, honoring winners in four different categories. Bobby O'Grady (men's lacrosse) and Maggie Starker (women's soccer) earned male and female Rookie of the Year, while Hunter Eichhorn (men's golf) and Lauren Van Kleunen (women's basketball) were awarded Recorded Breaking Performance honors.
Jordan Schmid, a graduate student on the men's lacrosse team, was bestowed the For the Love of the Game award for dedication to the MLAX team despite a medical retirement. He and Maddie Monticello (women's soccer) each earned the Cura Personalis award, meaning care for the whole person.
For the third-straight season, the women's soccer team claimed the MAGIS Team Spirit Cup, which was created to encourage participation in all areas of the student-athlete experience. The Spirit Cup awards points based on four areas: academics, community service, student-athlete development and athletes supporting athletes.
Finally, Marquette president Dr. Michael Lovell selected Van Kleunen as the recipient of the 2021-22 President's Award.
