Mary Schumar named team MVP
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette women's lacrosse team has announced its team award winners for the 2022 campaign, led by the squad's most valuable player, Mary Schumar.
The junior attacker was a major reason for MU's success this season and she put together one of the top offensive seasons in program history. Schumar finished the year ranking sixth in the nation with a program record tying 43 assists. She also tacked on 24 goals to tie the school's all-time mark for points in a season with 67, a mark which ranked fourth among BIG EAST players. Schumar also totaled 25 ground balls and 18 turnovers, and was honored as one of the league's top attackers as she was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team.
A pair of Golden Eagles are recipients of the Gold Standard Award, an honor which is awarded to a player or players who give their best effort day in and day out, and who stand out for living the Gold Standard in all that they do. Senior defender Ellie Henry and sophomore defender Audrey Brett were this year's honorees, each playing a significant role in the team's defense. Henry and Brett combined for 35 starts this season, each starting in every game that they played. Henry, a native of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, recorded 25 ground balls and a team-high 19 caused turnovers, while also leading the squad with 88 draw controls, a stat which MU finished 8th nationally as a team. Brett, a Glenview, Illinois native, led the team with 38 ground balls this year to go along with 12 caused turnovers.
Freshman attack/midfielder Elise Smigiel earned the team's 'Most Improved' award. The Flourtown, Pennsylvania, native saw her role increase as the season progressed, eventually developing as a key contributor for the Golden Eagles. She finished the year with 23 goals and 26 points, each of which came in the final 14 games of the year. The true freshman recorded hat tricks against San Diego State and UConn, while having multiple goals in nine games.
Senior defender Maria Mulvihill was given the 'MU Rah Rah' Spirit Award for showing energy and enthusiasm in all that she did. The Hinsdale, Illinois, native appeared in five games this season, and brought positivity, spirit and love for Marquette and the team on a daily basis.
