Eichhorn earns third conference play of the year honor
BIG EAST Release
NEW YORK – Marquette University men's golfer Hunter Eichhorn was named BIG EAST Player of the Year for the third time in his career on Monday and Max Lyons was honored as BIG EAST Freshman of the Year.
Eichhorn also captured similar honors following the 2017-18 and 2020-21 seasons, while Lyons is the fourth Golden Eagle in program history to earn BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. A Golden Eagle has captured each of the last four league player of the year awards with Oliver Farrell having earned recognition in 2019. MU has also won five of the previous seven dating back to Patrick Sanchez in 2015 (the honor was not awarded during the 2019-20 campaign).
Eichhorn, the only player in league history to earn player of the year three times, has carded rounds of par-or-better in 25 of 32 rounds this season and set a Marquette record with an 11-under 61 in the final round of the Puerto Rico Classic on Feb. 15. His 54-hole score of 203 (-13) in Puerto Rico was also a personal low. He finished as MU's No. 1 golfer at the last nine events (9-of-11 this season) and is the only BIG EAST golfer inside the Golfstat top 100.
The graduate student was an All-BIG EAST First Team selection for the fourth time and won four BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week accolades this season.
Lyons follows teammates Eichhorn (2017-18) and Tyler Leach (2018-19), as well as former Golden Eagle Matthew Bachmann (2016-17), as the BIG EAST's top freshman. He was Marquette's top finisher at its first two events of the year, including the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills. He currently owns the MU freshman record for total strokes (205) and strokes against par (-11) from the Puerto Rico Classic this spring.
The Phoenix native posted a 72.72 stroke scoring average as a rookie and was second on MU with eight rounds in the 60s. He also tied former MU golfer Matt Haase (2009) for the BIG EAST tournament all-time low round with an 8-under 64 in the opening round of this year's event at Callaway Gardens.
