The Golden Eagles garnered a pair of first-place votes
NEW YORK – Middle blocker Carsen Murray was named Preseason All-BIG EAST Conference and the Marquette University women's volleyball team was picked to finish second in the league's annual preseason coaches' survey.
The Golden Eagles, who earned a share of the league's regular season title last fall, earned two first-place votes in the poll and were nine points behind preseason favorite Creighton. DePaul is projected to finish third with 72 points, while UConn slots in right behind the Blue Demons with 71 points.
Murray started all 32 matches last season at middle blocker while leading the squad with a .336 hitting percentage. She also notched 95 blocks for an average of 0.86 per frame and posted 169 kills (1.54 per set). The native of Lee's Summit, Missouri finished second in the conference in hitting percentage in 2021 and was recognized as the league's defensive player of the week on Oct. 4 after helping MU to wins over UConn and DePaul. She also earned all-tournament recognition at the Red & White Invitational on Sept. 3-5 for her play in wins over Illinois State, Ohio and UIC.
The Golden Eagles concluded the 2021 season at 26-6 overall and earned their second BIG EAST regular season title while advancing to the NCAA tournament for the 10th time.
In addition to Murray, MU returns Carly Skrabak, who played libero for the final 25 matches last season and earned all-tournament recognition at the conference championship. The Golden Eagles add five true freshmen this fall along with a pair of transfers in former Wisconsin Gatorade Player of the Year Aubrey Hamilton and two-time NJCAA National Player of the Year Yadhira Anchante.
