Henry, Soccodato, Schumar and Chmielewski to lead 2023 squad
MILWAUKEE — With just under a month until the start of the 2023 campaign, the Marquette University women's lacrosse team has officially announced Ellie Henry, Emma Soccodato, Mary Schumar and Faith Chmielewski as team captains.
"We are so excited to have these four as captains this season," said Marquette head coach Meredith Black. "All four of them have been chosen by their teammates because they all stand out as leaders in one way or another. They are great examples of what it means to live the Gold Standard in our program. We are excited for each of them to lead us to our best season yet!"
This will be the third-straight season that Henry, a fifth-year senior, has been elected a team captain. The defender from Eden Prairie, Minnesota, is coming off of a stellar 2022 campaign in which she earned all-BIG EAST second team honors after leading one of the nation's top draw control teams and averaging 4.89 draw controls per game. She also totaled 25 ground balls and 19 caused turnovers, and was the recipient of the team's 'Hustle' Award.
Soccodato also served as a team captain last year, and now returns for her senior season at MU. A midfielder from Huntington, New York, she was a second-team all-BIG EAST selection a season ago after the strongest statistical season of her career. Soccodato went for 38 points on 30 goals and eight assists in 2022, while ranking seventh in the BIG EAST with 64 draw controls. She also had 24 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers.Â
After a record-setting breakout year in 2022, Schumar will serve as a first time team captain this season. She earned all-BIG EAST first team and MU Team MVP honors after tying Marquette single-season program records of 67 points and 43 assists. Her 2.39 assists per contest led the BIG EAST and ranked seventh in the NCAA, while her 67 points were fourth-most in the league.
A junior defender out of Westminster, Maryland, Chmielewski also makes her debut as a team captain this season. She was one of the anchors of the MU defense last season, making 16 starts during her sophomore campaign. Chmielewski totaled 28 ground balls, 16 caused turnovers and two draw controls on the year.Â
