Widal to join MU from Tiffin University with two years of eligibility remaining
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's golf program has signed Johan Widal from NCAA Division II Tiffin University for the 2024-25 academic year, head coach Steve Bailey announced Tuesday afternoon.
Widal will arrive in Milwaukee in the summer of 2024 and have two years of eligibility remaining with the Golden Eagles.
"Johan has the combination of character and competitiveness that has been vital to the growth of Marquette Golf," MU head coach Steve Bailey said. "He has used those traits to excel on and off the course, and we are very excited for the positive impact he will have on our team and campus."
A native of Halmstad, Sweden, Widal was a GCAA/PING Division II All-Midwest Region selection as a freshman in 2022-23 after placing 15th at the NCAA Division II Men's Central/Midwest Regional at The Bridges Golf Course in Winona, Minnesota. He was also an All-Great Midwest Athletic Conference First Team selection and has earned three GMAC Men's Golfer of the Week honors.
Widal rode a good freshman campaign into a big summer on the European junior circuit and carried that momentum into this fall, where he is the fourth-ranked Division II men's golfer in the Midwest according to Spikemark.
He earned top-four finishes in four of the six events he played in this fall, including a win at the Midwest Regional on Oct. 9-10 at St. Albans Country Club, hosted by Missouri-St. Louis at the Lewis and Clark Course. He was also runner-up this fall at Tiffin's Kyle Ryman Memorial on Oct. 2-3 at Mohawk Golf and Country Club and Findlay's Nemacolin Intercollegiate on Oct. 23-24 at the Mystic Rock Course in Farmington, Pennsylvania.
Widal dropped his scoring average from 72.94 strokes as a freshman by over one stroke to 71.60 this fall.
He attended Aspero Idrottgymnasium in Sweden before heading to the United States and is an accomplished European junior golfer. He finished runner up at three events this summer, including the European Juniors International in June at Golfpark Weiherhoff in Wadern-Nunkurchen, Germany.
He also recorded a 6-under 138 at the Vreta PING Junior Open in mid-May at Vreta Kloster Golfklubb and posted a 5-under 211 in the Swedish Junior Tour Division I at Viksjö Golfklubb in August.
