WBB to face South Florida Friday in NCAA First Round

Ninth-seeded Golden Eagles will face 8-seed South Florida on Friday

MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University women's basketball team (21-10, 13-7 BIG EAST) earned an at-large bid as a 9-seed to the 2023 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship, and will face 8-seed South Florida (26-6, 15-1 AAC) in the first round on Friday, March 17 at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, South Carolina.Â
This is Marquette's 14th all-time NCAA appearance, and its first since 2020-21. The Golden Eagles were one of five BIG EAST Conference teams to hear their name called during the selection show Sunday night, joining 2-seed UConn, 4-seed Villanova, 6-seed Creighton and 11-seed St. John's.Â
The winner of the Marquette-USF game will advance to the second round to play the winner of the No. 1-overall seed South Carolina and 16-seed Norfolk State.
Tip time and TV coverage for Friday's game will be announced by Monday morning.Â

- The Golden Eagles posted a 21-10 campaign this season with a 13-7 mark in league play, and advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament semifinals for the seventh-straight year
- Marquette earned its two highest-ranked wins in program history this year, defeating then-No. 3 Texas and then-No. 4 UConn
- The senior duo of Chloe Marotta and Jordan King each earned All-BIG EAST First Team honors, the first time that Marquette has ever had multiple first team honorees in a season
- Mackenzie Hare and Emily La Chapell each earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Freshman team
- Marquette has won 20-plus games in six of the past seven seasons
- The Golden Eagles have appeared in 13 NCAA tournaments, most recently as a 10-seed in 2021. They hhave advanced past the first round six times.
- This will be the second time Marquette has been a 9-seed in the NCAA tournament, previously doing so in 2004 when it earned a 67-64 win over Old Dominion in the opening round before falling to top-seeded Duke.
- Marquette and former conference foe South Florida have matched up 21 times with Marquette holding a 16-5 advantage in the all-time series. This will be the first meeting between the squads since 2013.
- South Florida went 26-6 overall this season with a 15-1 record in conference play to win the American Athletic Conference regular season title. It was upset 65-53 in the opening round of the conference tournament by 8-seed Wichita State.
