Three MUWLAX Players Earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors

Osburn named Freshman of the Week, Nixon and Schumar named to Weekly Honor Roll
NEW YORK — Three Marquette women's lacrosse players earned BIG EAST Weekly Honors after helping the team to a 2-0 showing last week with win over Niagara and Louisville, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Attacker Tess Osburn was named the league's Freshman of the Week, while sophomore goalkeeper Brynna Nixon and senior attacker Mary Schumar each earned a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll.Â
Osburn had an oustanding week, totaling six points on five goals and an assist to go along with four ground balls and a caused turnover. She followed a two-goal performance against Niagara with a hat trick in Sunday's win over Louisville, picking up two ground balls in each contest. Nixon played all 120 minutes in goal for the Golden Eagles, combining for 21 saves with a .477 save percentage on the week. She recorded a career-high 12 saves to help spark the MU defense vs Louisville. Schumar had a strong all-around week as well, totaling two goals, seven assists, six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Against the Cardinals, she had a team-high seven points on two goals and five assists.
This was Osburn's second Freshman of the Week honor, after earning it on March 6 as well. It was Nixon's first career weekly honor, and the Schumar's third of the season.Â
BIG EAST Attacker of the Week
Caroline Curnal, Villanova, Gr., A
The graduate student totaled 10 points off eight goals and two assists in a 2-0 week for Villanova. Curnal had three goals off four shots on goal in the Wildcats' 15-1 win over Lafayette along with five goals off seven shots on goal as Villanova defeated Quinnipiac 16-12. Curnal also added 25 draw controls throughout the two games over the weekend, including a career-high 16 against Lafayette. She currently ranks eighth nationally in draw controls per game with 8.38.

BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week
Ellie Curry, Denver, Sr., M
Curry scored a hat trick for Denver in its 13-8 win over then-No. 4 Boston College. The senior midfielder also added one assist, three ground balls and two caused turnovers in the Pioneers' win over the Eagles. Curry also notched three assists in the 13-6 win against Delaware to give her six total points during a 2-0 week for the Pioneers.Â

BIG EAST Defender of the Week
Bryn McCaughey, Denver, Jr., D
The junior defender had a strong showing in a 2-0 week for Denver. McCaughey totaled six caused turnovers, four ground balls and one draw control over the two games last week. She also scored the second goal of her career in Denver's win over Delaware. McCaughey now averages 2.25 caused turnovers per game, which ranks 12th among all NCAA Division I players.Â

Tess Osburn, Marquette, Fr., A
Osburn had six points off five goals and one assist to clinch her second BIG EAST Freshman of the Week award this season. The freshman attacker scored two goals in a 13-12 win over Niagara and had a hat trick in a 15-11 victory against Louisville. Additionally, Osburn totaled four ground balls and one caused turnover in the undefeated week for the Golden Eagles.Â

Julia Gilbert, Denver, Sr., A – scored five goals for the Pioneers last week, including a hat trick in a victory over Delaware and two in the win over then-No. 4 Boston College; Against the Blue Hens, Gilbert became the 12th-fastest and 20th in program history to score 100 career goals for Denver.
Bryanna Nixon, Marquette, So., GK – averaged a .477 save percentage in a 2-0 week for Marquette; Nixon had 21 saves in the two victories, including a career-high 12 in the Golden Eagles' 15-11 win against Louisville
Mary Schumar, Marquette, Sr., A – totaled nine points off two goals and seven assists as Marquette defeated Niagara and Louisville last week; Schumar also added six ground balls and four caused turnovers over the weekend; Schumar ranks second nationally in total assists (26) and assists per game (3.71)
