Kushner joins the Golden Eagles after four seasons at Illinois State
MILWAUKEE – Marquette University head women's volleyball coach Ryan Theis has announced the addition of Illinois State graduate transfer Sarah Kushner for the 2023-24 academic year.
"We are looking forward to adding an experienced player in Sarah to our roster for the fall," Theis said. "In the five matches she's played against us over her career we were impressed by her competitiveness and expect her to be an asset to our ball control and passing game. We are grateful that she chose Marquette for her final year as we pursue another BIG EAST title."
Kushner, who played outside hitter at ISU, joins the Golden Eagles with one year of eligibility remaining after playing four seasons for the Redbirds. In five matches against MU over the last four years, Kushner averaged 2.37 kills and 2.53 digs per set over 19 frames.
In her career at Illinois State, Kushner recorded 1,057 total kills (2.49 per set) on .163 hitting with 120 service aces, 1,159 digs (2.73/set) and 159 blocks (0.40/set). She became just the seventh player in ISU history to reach 1,000 career kills and 1,000 digs as a senior and was a two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference selection.
Kushner earned All-MVC First Team honors as a junior in 2021 while recording 19 double-doubles and leading the Redbirds to an NCAA tournament appearance with a MVC title match triumph over Loyola Chicago.
She earned All-MVC Second Team honors as a sophomore in the shortened 2020-21 spring season and was an MVC All-Tournament Team selection as a freshman in 2019.
Kushner appeared in all 89 matches over her first three campaigns in Normal but was limited to 24 of 29 matches as a senior in 2022.
She was a four-year starter at Naperville High School and led the squad to back-to-back 30-win seasons in 2017 and 2018. Kushner led the Huskies to three regional championships and was the region's most valuable player as a junior and senior.
She joins a Golden Eagles squad that has captured consecutive BIG EAST Conference regular season titles and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2022. Marquette returns all six starters but must replace graduated libero Carly Skrabak.
