Garcia, Schumar Earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors

Duo helped Golden Eagles improve to 12-1 with pair of wins last week
NEW YORK — After helping the Marquette women's lacrosse team to a 2-0 showing with wins over Ohio State and Xavier last week, senior attackers Shea Garcia and Mary Schumar were each honored by the BIG EAST. Garcia made history in Saturday's game against Xavier, scoring a program-record eight goals including seven in the first quarter alone. She also had a pair of goals in the win over Ohio State, and has now moved into the top spot on Marquette's all-time points list with 201. Schumar earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after another stellar week, totaling 11 points on two goals and nine assists. Against the Musketeers, she finished with two goals, six assists, two ground balls and a caused turnover.Â
BIG EAST Attacker of the Week
Shea Garcia, Marquette, Sr., A
Garcia scored 10 goals last week as the Golden Eagles went 2-0. The senior attacker scored eight of her goals in a 22-7 win over Xavier to help Marquette improve to 2-0 in conference play. Her remaining two goals came in a non-conference 13-12 victory against Ohio State. Garcia is tied for third in the league for goals per game (3.00). The Golden Eagles are receiving votes in the IWLCA Division I Poll for the first time in program history with a 12-1 overall record.Â

BIG EAST Midfielder of the Week
Ellie Curry, Denver, Sr., M
The senior midfielder had a total of five points last week off two goals and three assists as the No. 3 Pioneers went 2-0. Curry also added six ground balls and three caused turnovers as Denver defeated Butler, 19-4, and won at then-No 25 Connecticut, 14-9.

BIG EAST Defender of the Week
Sam Thacker, Denver, Sr., D
Thacker put on a strong defensive performance in Denver's two victories last week. She totaled eight draw controls, six caused turnovers and three ground balls in the two games. The senior defender had a season-high six draw controls at UConn, which is one off her career-high. Thacker also leads the BIG EAST in caused turnovers per game with 2.15.

BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Ryan Dineen, Denver, Fr., A
The freshman attacker tallied 11 points last week for the Pioneers as she had five goals and six assists in two games. Dineen had a career-high eight points against the Bulldogs and her six assists against Butler are the eighth-most in a single game in program history. She had her third hat trick of the season on the road against the Huskies. Dineen also converted on three of four free position shots last week.Â
