NEW YORK – Marquette University goalie Lucas Lawas was named the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week for men's lacrosse, the league announced on Monday afternoon.
Lawas made his first career start against No. 9/10 Georgetown on Saturday and posted a career-high 15 saves in the 15-14 overtime loss. He played a total of 62:12 in net and made five crucial fourth quarter saves as the Golden Eagles pushed the game to extra time.
He faced a Hoyas offense that entered the contest leading the BIG EAST in shots on goal per game.
It is the third time this season that a Marquette freshman has earned the accolade and the first honor of Lawas' career. MU midfielder Andrew Bowman earned top rookie honors on Feb. 6 and March 20 for his play against Lindenwood and then-No. 5 Penn State, respectively.
The Golden Eagles head to No. 12/13 Villanova for an 11 a.m. Central game on Saturday before returning to Milwaukee next week to host No. 10 Denver on Friday, April 28 at Valley Fields for Senior Night.
