Morgan Daugherty talks about her experience as a first-year volleyball player
Morgan Daugherty earned a redshirt in the fall of 2022 and is a middle blocker from Brookfield, Wisconsin.
Q. What is your favorite thing about playing volleyball?
A. The people! I've met best friends and mentors I never would have met if I didn't play the sport.
Q. What achievement are you most proud of thus far in your volleyball career?Â
A. Making it to the Sweet 16 was a special experience.
Q. How are you going to challenge yourself this season?Â
A. I'm going to go even further outside my comfort zone on the court and push myself to new limits in the weight room.
Q. You played club with teammate Ella Holmstrom, what was it like to find out she was also going to play at Marquette and what was it like to play with her again last season?
A. It was such a cool and rare experience to get a season of club under my belt with a future college teammate. We met right before she committed to Marquette and clicked immediately! Within a month of being teammates, we decided we wanted to live together and got down to business planning our dream room. It was so nice going into college athletics with such a great friend beside me.
Q. How has Marquette and the team supported you in the transition from high school to college?
A. I was so anxious in my transition from high school to college, and some of my older teammates were so helpful in easing those anxieties. Once I got to campus, everyone was so great at integrating the freshmen into the team by inviting us to hang out, taking our input at open gyms, and showing us around.
Q. Who has inspired you the most in your life?Â
A. My parents have definitely inspired me most in my life. My parents met at the University of Wisconsin where my dad played basketball. They fell in love and got married fresh out of college, moved halfway across the world where my dad pursued his pro career, and my mom taught English to kids in whichever town they live. This love for exploration and adventure is engrained in me, and I can't wait to explore the world like they did.
Q. What are you most excited for in the upcoming season?
A. For my team to push our limits to our highest potential.
Q. What has challenged you the most playing at the NCAA Division I volleyball level?
A. The schedule has definitely challenged me the most. Not only are we in the gym, but we are also studying, volunteering, traveling, and more. It is also incredibly physically demanding.
Q. If you weren't playing volleyball, what other sport would you want to play?
A. I played basketball when I was younger but ultimately chose volleyball when it became too hard to balance both.
Q. What is your top song on your pre-game playlist?Â
A. To be honest, I am not a hype music girl when it comes to pre-game. If I had to pick something it would be anything by Tyler, the Creator. I prefer to chill out because I'm already anxious.Â
Q. What goals have you set for yourself for the upcoming season?
A. To work on my mindset and physicality.
Q. If you could tell your younger self one thing, what would it be?Â
A. You can make anything work if you really want it.
