The Golden Eagles will host three open practices at the Al prior to departure
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University women's volleyball team heads to Central Europe on June 5-16 for a trip through Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic.
"We are thankful for the opportunity due to the commitment of our University administration and tremendous donor support," Marquette head coach Ryan Theis said. "We do not take for granted what an amazing opportunity this is for our student-athletes, and we are looking forward to competing while providing eye-opening cultural experiences."
The Golden Eagles will play matches against European clubs with one match each in Warsaw, Wroclaw and Berlin and a pair of contests in Prague.
"When I discuss greatest memories with our graduating athletes – the foreign tour is always in the top three," Theis said. "We greatly appreciate so many kind and generous donors that have helped contribute to this once and a lifetime experience."
The two weeks following Marquette University's commencement activities on May 21, the Golden Eagles are allotted 10 days of training prior to their departure for Europe. During that time Marquette will host three open practices at the Al McGuire Center on Friday-Saturday, May 26-27 and Friday, June 2.
The extra training time will assist the Golden Eagles as they incorporate a pair of newcomers to the roster for a challenging fall schedule, which features six non-conference matches against top-30 RPI teams from a season ago, including three teams that competed in NCAA regional finals.
Illinois State graduate transfer Sarah Kushner will arrive on campus on May 22 to begin training thanks to NCAA rules changes that allow incoming student-athletes to participate in foreign trips before completing summer coursework. Incoming freshman Molly Berezowitz (Burlington, Wisconsin) will join the team prior to its departure for Europe.
The trip will serve as a homecoming of sorts to Europe for middle blocker Anastasija Svetnik, who is from Minsk, Belarus, but has spent a good deal of time in nearby Poland with family.
NCAA Division I programs are allowed to take a foreign tour once every four years and the MU women's volleyball team last spent time abroad in 2019 with a total of four matches in Italy, France and Spain.
The Golden Eagles return all six starters from the 2022 squad that won the BIG EAST Conference regular season championship, advanced to the program's second Sweet 16 and ended the year No. 13 in the AVCA Coaches Poll. BIG EAST Setter of the Year Yahira Anchante, also an AVCA All-American, returns to lead a MU team that includes fellow all-conference student-athletes Carsen Murray, Aubrey Hamilton, Hattie Bray and Jenna Reitsma.
The Golden Eagles have partnered with Bring It Promotions on the trip itinerary, accommodations, matches and tour guides.
