Induction ceremony coming in early 2024
Marquette University has announced its six newest inductees into the M Club Hall of Fame, including Wesley Matthews (Men's Basketball), Ryan McNamara (Men's Lacrosse), Terri Mitchell (Women's Basketball Head Coach), Tyler O'Brien (Men's Track & Field), Morgan Proffitt (Women's Soccer) and Christine (Spindler) Jurss (Women's Track & Field).
The six honorees each represent a different sport at Marquette and will officially be inducted in early 2024 prior to a home men's basketball game (details to follow).
"It's an honor to recognize another group of tremendous student-athletes and coaches," M Club President Jim Packee said. "This year's group spans numerous eras of success and is well deserving of its induction into the hall of fame. On behalf of the entire M Club, thank you for all you have done."
Matthews (2006-09) ranks among Marquette's top-10 in five career categories, including scoring (10th, 1,673 points). He helped the Golden Eagles to 94 wins (ninth-most in program history), four NCAA tournament appearances and was named All-BIG EAST Second Team as a senior. One of the top free throw shooters at Marquette, he ranks second in both free throws made (549) and attempted (687). Matthews' 14-year NBA career continues with the Atlanta Hawks in 2023-24 and he has scored more than 11,000 career points, third most of any MU player. His 950 career appearances are the fourth-most in NBA history by an undrafted player.
McNamara (2014-17) was Marquette's first two-time USILA All-American (2016, 2017) and was named All-BIG EAST First Team his final two years. He is currently No. 1 in six career categories with the Golden Eagles, including points (152), goals (102) and shots on goal (209). He helped the Blue & Gold to a pair of BIG EAST Conference tournament titles and NCAA tournament trips and played in more career games (64) than any player in program history. Following his tenure at MU, McNamara played four seasons in Major League Lacrosse (selected in 2017 draft) and one campaign in the Premier Lacrosse League.
Mitchell (1991-2014) led the Golden Eagles to both team and individual success during her 18-year tenure as women's basketball head coach. She guided the program to seven NCAA tournament appearances, four Conference USA regular season titles and the 2008 Women's National Invitation Tournament Championship. The team claimed 348 wins under her guidance and her winning percentage (.618) is second-best in program history. Mitchell was named the league's coach of the year on three occasions and the Golden Eagles claimed 10 seasons with 20-or-more victories. She also worked for five seasons at MU as an assistant coach before taking over as head coach.
Tyler O'Brien (2007-12) was an All-BIG EAST Conference selection in 2011 in the 200 meters at the outdoor championships and his personal-best time of 21.05 still tops the Marquette record book. He concluded his career as the program record holder in the indoor and outdoor 200-meter dashes, as well as the indoor 300 meters. O'Brien represented Marquette three times at the NCAA Division I Preliminary Rounds and was a three-time team MVP. He remains in the program's top-10 in eight different indoor and outdoor events, including second all-time in the 100-meter dash (10.55) behind only Ralph Metcalfe.
Proffitt (2013-16) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and All-BIG EAST First Team as a senior in 2016, becoming just the third player in program history named to the watch list for the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy. She helped MU to a pair of BIG EAST regular season titles and one tournament championship and earned All-BIG EAST Second Team accolades in 2014. Marquette made two NCAA tournament trips during her tenure and she was tabbed to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team all four years. Drafted by the Chicago Red Stars No. 12 overall in 2016, she also helped the United States Under-23 Women's National Team to a Gold medal at a Nordic tournament in England in the summer of 2015.
(Spindler) Jurss (1990-93) was named the most outstanding performer at the 1993 Great Midwest Conference Indoor Championships after winning the 55m hurdles, high jump and triple jump, which included a pair of league records. A recipient of the McCahill Award, presented to Marquette's top senior student-athlete, Spindler graduated a 13-time conference champion and set the league record in three outdoor events (high jump, heptathlon, 100-meter hurdles). A three-time team MVP, she left MU in possession of seven school records and is still in the top-10 all-time in 11 events. After 30 years, Spindler still ranks second at Marquette in the high jump (5-9.25) and heptathlon (5,321 points).
