Golden Eagles add two-time Illinois state medalist and a top European junior
MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's golf program has signed a pair of student-athletes for the 2025-26 academic year in two-time Illinois high school state champion Regan Konen and Mischa Candinas of Switzerland, one of the top junior amateur golfers in Europe.
"We are excited to officially welcome Mischa and Regan to the Marquette golf family," said 15th-year MU head coach Steve Bailey. "Both young men exemplify excellence on and off the golf course and we are eager for them to join our team and be difference makers as Marquette student-athletes."
Konen, from Sugar Grove, Illinois holds a 4.29 grade point average at Marmion Academy and claimed IHSA Class 2A State Medalist honors as both junior and senior in 2023 and 2024. He carded a 69.4 strokes-per-round average as a senior and medaled in 10 of the 12 events in which he competed, including the Chicago Catholic League Championship and the IHSA Class 2A regionals and sectionals.
In the summer of 2024, Konen won stroke play in the 44th Chick Evans Junior Amateur Championship at Itasca Country Club with a 10-under 134, three strokes better than the runner-up finisher.
He's a two-year team captain and a four-time IHSA Class 2A state qualifier, who is just the eighth player to post consecutive Illinois state high school championships since 1915.
The 2024 Chicago Catholic League Player of the Year was named to the 2024 AJGA Rolex Scholastic Honor Roll and earned the AJGA Burty Sportsmanship Award. In addition to his academic endeavors at Marmion, Konen is president of Interact Rotary Club, vice president of youth engagement and philanthropy, and both a member of the Marmion Faith Group and a Marmion Mentor Leader.
Konen is the latest in a long line of Illinois prep standouts to suit up for the Golden Eagles. He'll join current sophomore Ryan Banas of Winnetka, Illinois (Loyola Academy) next fall on the MU roster, which will lose fellow Winnetka-native Patrick Adler to graduation.
Candinas is the top-ranked Swiss under-25 golfer and earned medalist honors this summer at both the Swiss Golf National Championship and Swiss U-25 Championship. He carded a 19-under 197 to win the U-25 event on Aug. 5-7 at Golfclub Markgräflerland, while breaking the club's 36 and 54-hole records, in addition to a course-record 63 in the opening round. Just eight days earlier he won the Swiss Championship with a 137 (68-69) in the Golf & Country Club Blumisberg in Wünnewil on July 25-28.
The native of Geroldswil in greater Zürich, Switzerland burst onto the scene last fall by winning the Bogogno International Junior Open in Italy (Oct. 30-Nov. 1) by 13 strokes to jump into the World Amateur Golf Ranking. On the strength of his wins this summer in the Swiss championships and solid play this fall, Candinas has jumped to as high as 449th in the WAGR rankings and currently sits 552nd in WAGR and 65th in the European Golf Rankings.
He has finished in the top 11 in each event he has played during the 2024 calendar year, outside of a pair of events he competed in with professional golfers. Included in those 14 top-11 finishes are nine combined top-five finishes in Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands.
Most recently, Candinas competed on Nov. 12-16 in Trinity, Texas as part of Team Switzerland in The 2024 Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship at Whispering Pines Golf Club. He and teammate Max Schliesing placed 11th out of 20 nations playing in the event.
Candinas will be one of two Europeans on the roster in 2025-26 alongside Johan Widal of Halmstad, Sweden.
The Golden Eagles are coming off three top-two team finishes to conclude fall play and resume action at BIG EAST Conference Match Play on Feb. 3-4 in West Palm Beach, Florida at Bear Lake Country Club. Â
