UPDATE: Carsen Brandt was not listed as the league's offensive player of the week on the first release.
NEW YORK — Marquette University men's lacrosse attackman Carsen Brandt is the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week for the second time in as many weeks and the league's offensive player of the week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
Brandt recorded a game-high six points on a hat trick and three assists to lead the Golden Eagles (2-0) to a 16-5 win over Bellarmine on Friday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Graduate defenseman Mason Woodward set a new MU record with his 219th career ground ball against the Lions to earn honor roll recognition for the first time this season. Faceoff specialist is also on the league's honor roll once again after winning 7-of-10 draws and picking up six ground balls against Lindenwood.
Through two games, Brandt leads Marquette with eight points on five goals and three assists and is the first MU freshman in program history with more than six points his first two NCAA games. Only Jordan Greenfield, a MU graduate transfer in 2015, had more points in his first two games with the Golden Eagles (4 goals, 5 assists).
Brandt is the fifth Marquette freshman to post at least six points in a single game and only the second to do so with a hat trick. Conor Gately notched six points twice during MU's first season of competition in 2013, while Brandt's current teammates Jake Stegman and Will Foster each reached the mark during their rookie campaigns in 2020 and 2022, respectively.
Woodward scooped up four ground balls in the win over Lindenwood and added one caused turnover. His final ground ball of the game at the 7:12 mark of the third quarter gave him his 219th career ground ball to pass former USILA All-American Liam Byrnes (218) in the MU record book.
