Volleyball picked second in BIG EAST; four players honored

NEW YORK – Yadhira Anchante, Hattie Bray, Carsen Murray and Aubrey Hamilton were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Conference Team and the Marquette University women's volleyball team was picked to finish second in the league's annual preseason coaches' survey. Hamilton is a unanimous all-league selection.
The Golden Eagles are coming off a season in which they won a third-consecutive BIG EAST regular season title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. MU went 16-2 in league play in 2023 and received 91 points in the preseason coaches' poll, nine behind preseason favorite Creighton.
All four of the MU student-athletes recognized have earned postseason All-BIG EAST honors in each of the previous two seasons.
Hamilton is a two-time AVCA All-Region selection who led the Golden Eagles last season with 434 kills for an average of 3.77 per frame while hitting .274 (434-123-1,136). The unanimous all-league selection hit .312 in conference play and her 3.82 kills and 4.43 points per set average each ranked second among BIG EAST peers.
The native of Hartland, Wisconsin earned six BIG EAST weekly honors in 2023 and landed her 1,000th career kill against then-No. 1 Wisconsin at Fiserv Forum. Hamilton hit .346 in the NCAA First Round against EIU and posted a team-best 22 kills with a pair of blocks and eight digs against Purdue in the second round.
Bray, who was also an AVCA All-Region selection in 2023, hit .272 as a redshirt sophomore with 250 kills (2.19 per set) and 98 blocks (0.83 per set). She hit .417 (7-2-12) in the NCAA First Round against Eastern Illinois and posted a monster hitting mark of .615 in the second round against Purdue with 16 kills on 26 errorless swings.
The native of Hancock, Wisconsin ranked sixth in BIG EAST play in blocks per set (0.98) and was 16th in hitting percentage.
Anchante was the 2022 BIG EAST Setter of the Year and earned her second postseason all-conference honor last year. She averaged 9.77 assists per set in BIG EAST play and recorded 14 double-doubles overall.
Murray led the BIG EAST with a hitting percentage of .420 (105-21-200) in league play while ranking fourth in blocks per set with 1.00 per frame (58 total). Murray was a unanimous all-league pick in 2022 and is Marquette's all-time leader in hitting percentage (.379 on 1,206 total attempts).
Last year, Marquette finished the conference season leading the league in service aces with 118 (1.97 per set) and second in hitting percentage (.283), opponent hitting percentage (.148), blocks (2.38 per set) and digs (16.63 per set). The Golden Eagles were third in kills per set (13.65) and assists (12.47).
The Golden Eagles host Northwestern at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Al McGuire Center in their lone preseason exhibition match. MU's annual intra-squad scrimmage and youth clinic is slated for Sunday, Aug. 25.
