KENSOSHA, Wisconsin – The Marquette University cross country teams competed in their first race of 2025 at the Vic Godfrey Open in Kenosha on Friday.
"The women started things off really well, Emma led the way again going about 20 seconds faster than she did last year," Associate head cross country coach Jack Hackett said. "Our top five today averaged about what Emma ran last year. Overall, a much improved showing from last year. We had a whole group of freshmen that stepped up and helped make sure we continued to improve, the seniors we lost last year were very good, and Taya, Paige, Kaylie and Elise especially stepped right in."
Junior Emma Coon paced the women's team with a new PR 4k time of 14:23.25 to finish third.
Sophomore Sadie Kibelstis (14:46.86) and senior Daylee Braden (14:57.00) finished in the top ten with new PRs.
Taya Gummerson, Paige Haglund, Kaylie Earl, Ryleigh Ervin, Elise Fischer, Brynn Miller, and Allison Opalka made their Marquette debuts.
"On the men's side, we had two incredibly talented freshmen Patrick and Dylan lead the way for us," Hackett said. "They battled to the line with Patrick just getting the edge, though the story really should be about the team and the pack running together. There was a group of 7 working together throughout the race. Will Allen had a solid debut while he gets back to fitness and we had much improved races from Nick, Sean and Ron."
"The top five men last year averaged 19:55, while this year they averaged 18:52. Which is an absolutely staggering jump. The group worked really hard and we are set up for a much better season this year."
Patrick Clune paced the men's side in his first collegiate race, finishing third at 18:42.27 in the 5k.
Freshman Dylan Riniker (18:42.33) and junior transfer Will Allen (18:50.82) finished third and fourth in their Marquette debuts.
Junior Nick Parrell (19:01.17) and senior Sean Kellogg set PRs to finish in the top 10.
Sam Chandler made his Marquette debut on the men's side with Clune, Riniker and Allen.
UP NEXT: Marquette travels to Madison for the Badger Classic on Friday, Sept. 19.
