Golden Eagles record multiple new top-10 marks in successful three meet weekend.
MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Marquette University track and field team competed across three meets on Saturday, competing at the Mark Schuck Multi in Mankato, Minn., the Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind., and the Lake Michigan Open in Kenosha, Wis.
"We had an excellent weekend. We were a bit spread out over the Midwest, but had a lot of success at all three sites. We are just getting into the heat of the indoor season, so we expect to see our performances improving. This weekend showed that we are on our way," Bert Rogers, Director of Track and Field & Cross Country, said.
Saturday's performances at the Meyo Invitational were highlighted by Danny Olsen breaking his own indoor 400m school record, establishing the new number one mark at MU with a personal-best 47.48 for a fourth-place finish. Joining Olsen in rewriting the record books were the 4x400m Relay squad of Blake Frea, Frankie McGee, Drew Klopcic, and Bobby King, who ran the seventh-best time in MU history at 3:16.74, finishing fourth. MU's distance runners also had a strong day with four different personal records. Patrick Clune set a PR in the mile run at 4:11.33, while each of Nick Parrell (8:25.11), Dylan Rinkier (8:28.88), and Logan Goodman (8:40.79) set personal bests in the 3000m.
Wrapping up the two-day multi-events meet at the Mark Schuck Multi in Mankato, Gus Kasun finished second in the two-day heptathlon with 4,757 points, thanks to strong second day performances in the long jump (season-best 6.73m) and a personal-best 12.69m in the shot put. Cole Donahe improved 124 points on his previous personal-best mark in the heptathlon, finishing sixth with 4,571 points, and ranking ninth in MU history, while Henrik Rosario finished eighth with a personal-best 4,483 points, the 10th-best mark right behind Donahe.
The MU pole vault and hurdles squads took on the Lake Michigan Open about 30 minutes south of campus in Kenosha, where the women placed third of eight teams and the men placed fifth in a meet of nine other teams. On the women's side, in the 55m hurdles, MU took hold of the 3-7 spots in the race, led by Amerie Mitjans-Shapiro's personal-best 8.77 for third place. Olivia Verden was fourth in 8.77, while Makena Coltoff and Sylvia Fochesato ran personal-bests of 8.98 and 9.44, respectively, for fifth and sixth place. MU's vaulters took the top-three spots in the field, with the trio of Kassidy Papa, Kaitlyn Huebner, and Alexis Boyer clearing 3.50m, with that mark being personal-bests for Boyer and Papa.
On the men's side, Charlie Dutmer led the Golden Eagles in the 55mhHurdles, running a personal-best 8.12 for third place, while Owen Peterson finished sixth with a PR time of 8.29.
