Supporting Marquette University Female Student-Athletes and the Blue & Gold Athletic Scholarship Fund

PURPOSE

Marquette University's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics would like to take this opportunity to ask you to "tee it up" in support of Marquette's female student-athletes. On Tuesday, June 27, 2000, at the Bristlecone Pines Golf Club in Hartland, we will hold the 4th annual "Putt for the Eagles" golf event to celebrate, promote and help insure the continued growth of women's athletic programs at Marquette University as they strive for excellence in academics, athletics and leadership through service to others. Proceeds from the outing will support female student-athletes through the Blue & Gold Scholarship Fund.

THE MARQUETTE WOMEN

The six varsity sports that make up women's intercollegiate athletics at Marquette are thriving and developing a rich tradition. Women's sports at Marquette are on the move and have gained national recognition. Here are just a few of their accomplishments for this year.

Indoor & Outdoor Track
Marquette's women's track team placed fourth at the Conference USA Indoor Championships with Susan Barth winning the C-USA Freshman of the Year Award. The outdoor season is underway and we're anticipating a strong season.

Tennis
MU made history when Elisa Penalvo became the first MU player to reach the finals of the Milwaukee Tennis Classic. The No. 1 seed in this year's C-USA Championship, the team, at one point this season, was ranked 41st in the country, the second-highest ranking ever in school history.

Volleyball
The MU spikers finished with an overall record of 18-13 and its 58.1 winning percentage was the program's highest mark since 1985. Sophomore Vesna Grbavac set a school record for kills in a single-season with 520.

Cross Country
MU re-established itself as one of the top teams in the Midwest, earning second place at the C-USA Championship and finishing fifth out of 30 teams in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships.

Basketball
The MU women's basketball team made history when it achieved its first-ever national ranking and outright C-USA championship. Head Coach Terri Mitchell and her squad made its fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and finished the year with a record of 22-7, tying the school seasonal record for victories. The senior trio of Lisa Oldenburg, Kiesha Oliver and Abbie Willenborg all reached the 1,000-point plateau during their careers.

Soccer
Marquette women's soccer set new standards for the program, winning the school's first-ever C-USA Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance. The squad ended the year with a fine 16-7-2 record, establishing a school record for victories.

WHY DO WE NEED YOUR HELP?

In order to compete at this level, scholarship support is critical. In fact, the number of full scholarships offered to women has increased 138.9% since 1985.

The estimated cost of an athletic scholarship at Marquette University for 2000-01 will be over $24,000 per athlete.

Men's basketball ticket revenue is the major source of athletic income. Income is projected to increase 5% annually through 2001, scholarship costs are expected to increase 9% over the same period of time.

Other sources of income for men's basketball from NCAA Tournament appearances and television exposure are shared with the Conference USA membership.

THE BLUE & GOLD SCHOLARSHIP FUND

Marquette University's Intercollegiate Athletics is committed to excellence in academics, athletics and leadership through service to others. To support this quest for excellence, the Blue & Gold Scholarship Fund was established in 1994.

The goal of the Blue & Gold Scholarship Fund is to raise dollars to cover scholarship costs and provide opportunities for student-athletes at Marquette University. The Fund provides a base of fund raising services, communications and other assistance through which alumni and friends may enhance the development and achievement of Marquette's student-athletes.

Over 1,500 friends made a commitment to Marquette University's quest for excellence by supporting fund raising efforts to support athletic scholarships. Our goal with the "Putt for the Eagles" outing is to make a significant contribution to the Blue & Gold Scholarship Fund, which will establish Maquette University as a leader in intercollegiate athletics.
