Former All-American Nikki Klingsporn will serve as a student assistant coach and help the setters as she works towards her business degree in the fall of 2011.
'With Nikki's desire to enter the collegiate coaching ranks, this move was a no-brainer for our staff,' Shymansky said. 'Not only was Nikki a tremendous player for us during her career, but the leadership qualities she has displayed hinted at great potential as a future volleyball coach. We are blessed to have such a leader who wishes to pursue a career in coaching.'
Klingsporn was a 2010 AVCA All-American Honorable Mention and led MU to its best season in program history while ranking fourth in all of NCAA Division I with 12.10 assists per set. Marquette compiled a record of 41-21 in her two years on campus and reached the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship in 2010 for the second time since joining the league. The Oakdale, Minn., native ranks fourth in program history with 2,626 career assists.
Klingsporn will mentor incoming freshman setter Chelsea Heier as she looks to take the reins of the Golden Eagles' offense in 2011.
'Having Nikki around as we transition to a new setter will be beneficial to Chelsea as she learns our system. Being able to work with a new setter should also help Nikki truly get a feel for her new profession,' Shymansky said.
Klingsporn is one of eight former student-athletes currently coaching collegiate volleyball to have played under Shymansky.
