In 2012, the Golden Eagles made their first NCAA tournament appearance since 1997 while winning a program-record 16 matches. They followed that up in 2013 with another NCAA appearance and the program's first BIG EAST tournament title, while Axel Sjöberg earned most outstanding defensive player honors.

The towering 6-foot-7 Swede, Sjöberg was a two-time first team all-conference selection and the first MU player selected in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft.
