Men's Tennis Gets A Rest

UP NEXT Head coach David Staniford?s Marquette men?s tennis team takes several weeks off before heading back into action at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association/NCAA Regional Championships in Madison, Wis., on Nov. 5-7.
LAST WEEK Head coach David Staniford?s Marquette University men?s tennis squad turned in an impressive weekend by taking three consolation singles titles and one consolation doubles championship at the Drake Fall Invitational on Fri.-Sun., Oct. 15-17. The weekend was highlighted by the performance of freshman Eric Vescuso (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Brophy College Prep), who captured the consolation title in the D Singles Flight and teamed with Christophe Van Der Gucht (Waasmunster, Belgium / OLVC) to bring home the B Doubles Flight title.
Senior Bart Cordemeyer (Badhoevedorp, Holland / Keizer Karel) led the way for the Golden Eagles, going 3-1 to earn the A Singles Flight title. He defeated classmate Van Der Gucht 6-4, 7-5 on Sunday to close out his weekend. Van Der Gucht went 2-2 in singles action on the weekend.
In the B Singles Flight, junior Brian Verban (Bloomington, Ill. / Bloomington) advanced to the championship match before falling to Drake?s Stephen Killian when he retired down 6-0, 5-0 on Sunday. Verban went 3-1 in the championship B bracket, while Carlo Rossi (Preston, Victoria, Australia / St. Kevin?s College) went 1-1.
Both Vescuso and sophomore Frank Rigo (Tenerife, Spain / Bristish Yeoward School) went 3-1 on the weekend. They also both lost their first match of the weekend, but rebounded to win the D Singles consolation and the C Singles consolation brackets, respectively. Rigo downed Southern Illinois? Tim Marsh 7-5, 6-4. Vescuso defeated Creighton?s Ryan Polito 6-0, 6-4 for his D bracket consolation title. Freshman Justin Holson (Milwaukee, Wis.) went 2-1 in the C Flight, while classmate Kent Davies (Waukesha, Wis. / South) registered a 1-1 mark in the D Flight.
On the doubles side, Rossi and Verban lost in the championship match of the A Doubles Flight on Sunday, falling to Drake?s top doubles tandem by default. Cordemeyer and Holson went 2-1 in the A flight.
Vescuso and Van Der Gucht tallied a 3-1 record in taking the B Doubles Flight consolation championship, capping it of by defeating a duo from Southern Illinois 8-6 on Sunday. Rigo and Davies went 0-2 in doubles action.
