MILWAUKEE - The Marquette women?s soccer team overcame a slow start and came back to defeat Southern Miss 3-1 under sunny skies at Valley Fields this afternoon. After spotting Southern Miss a one-goal lead on an own goal, Marquette stormed back, with Kelly Roethe?s game-winner the second of three Marquette scores after the intermission. The win improves Marquette?s record to 10-6-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the league. Southern Miss is 7-8-1, 3-6-1 following the loss.
?It?s always tough to play on Sundays and we came out a little sluggish in the first half,? said acting head coach Frank Pelaez, who filled in for head coach Markus Roeders while the latter attended a funeral in his native Germany. ?We made some adjustments in the second half and the seniors stepped up and got us back in the game.?
Indicative of its slow start, Marquette allowed Southern Miss a one-goal lead at the 5:11 mark. USM?s Tricia Wiles took a free kick from 45 yards out that got caught up in the wind and was headed back into Marquette?s net by defender Rhegan Hyypio, who mistimed her jump. Southern Miss gained momentum from the surprising early lead and kept the pressure on for a majority of the remainder of the first half. Mo Bothwell made two saves to keep Marquette in the game, but Southern Miss took the 1-0 lead into the intermission.
The Golden Eagles surged back in the second half, however. Sparked by several lineup changes, the Golden Eagles gained the majority of possession and controlled play for most of the second frame. Marquette tied the score in the 56th minute when Lanette Rossini knocked a Katherine Ward cross back across the mouth of the goal into the left side of the net. It was Rossini?s second goal and sixth point of the weekend.
The Golden Eagles took the lead for good on a nifty sequence in the 74th minute. The play started when Lecia Schuetz lobbed a long ball across the field to the right wing, where Ashley Spakowitz ran on to it and then crossed it into the box. Roethe took the serve and one-timed it past Southern Miss keeper Hope Herron into the back right of the net for her team-leading tenth goal of the season. Anna Frisk concluded the scoring at the 84:47 mark when she redirected a Herron drop-kick back into the box, where the ball took one bounce over the Southern Miss keeper and crossed the goal line.
?Our goals were well deserved in the second half,? Pelaez said. ?Rossini and Roethe worked hard the whole game and our forwards provided a lot of pressure. Anne Dalecky also provided a spark in the midfield off the bench for us.?
Marquette freshman Ashleigh Koenig, who came on to the pitch for the second half, registered her first collegiate victory without facing a shot.
Marquette concludes its C-USA regular-season schedule on Fri., Oct. 29, when the Golden Eagles host DePaul at Valley Fields at 7 p.m. (CT).
