ST. LOUIS - The Marquette men's soccer team came up short in its final Conference USA regular-season game tonight, falling to #12 Saint Louis 4-3 in overtime. In a thrilling back and forth affair, the Golden Eagles came back from a two-goal deficit in the second half before the Billikens' Jack Jewsbury pulled out the victiry with a goal at 96:47 mark of the extra session. With the loss, Marquette falls to 10-7-0 and 5-3-0 in C-USA, while Saint Louis improves to 13-2-1, 6-1-0.
"This was one of the best college soccer matches I've ever been involved with," Marquette head coach Steve Adlard said. "It's a loss, but we took our performance up to a new level against a good Saint Louis team in a hostile environment."
On a night in which 2,337 fans celebrated as Saint Louis dedicated its new Robert R. Hermann Stadium, the Billikens came out of the blocks quickly, gaining the early possession and momentum. Saint Louis out-shot Marquette 6-1 in the opening frame. However, they could only connect once, taking a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute on an acrobatic strike by sophomore forward Jason Vijil.
The Golden Eagles fought back after the break, tying the score at the 48:37 mark when Bryan Godfrey headed in a Marshall Morehead cross from 12 yards out. The Marquette tally re-awoke the Billikens, though, as they scored twice in the next four minutes to take a 3-1 advantage. Jason Mims struck first, getting free in the box for a shot that found the back of the net from six yards out. Vijil again found the back of the net in the 53rd minute when he headed a Vedad Alagic cross in for the two-goal lead.
Marquette seemed to get the upper hand after the second score, though, as it continued to press up with an offensive-minded lineup. Off the bench to add a physical presence to the frontline, Nolan brought the Golden Eagles to within one on a diving, four-yard header at the 73:28 mark. Sean Reti knotted the game at 3-3 on a 30-yard blast from the midfield that froze the Saint Louis defense in the 97th minute.
Our three goals were tremendous," Adlard said. "The whole of our frontline is to be commended. Each of them made a significant impact on this game."
After several rushes by each team in the overtime period, Jewsbury dove into a Mims' cross and sent it past Marquette keeper Todd Schramm for the game-winner.
The Golden Eagles next play on Mon., Nov. 1, when they host UMKC at Valley Fields in a 7 p.m. (CT) contest.
