MILWAUKEE - Kate Gordon?s goal in the 76th minute made winners of the Marquette women?s soccer team today, as the Golden Eagles shutout Purdue 1-0 in their final regular-season contest. Marquette recorded its eighth shutout of the season, with Mo Bothwell making two big saves, and improved to 12-6-2. They currently have a five-game winning streak. With the loss, Purdue is now 8-11-0.
?They say its the mark of a good team to win when they don?t play their best game, and I think that was safe to say about us today,? Marquette coach Markus Roeders said. ?We didn?t play poorly, but we were kind of emotionally spent from Senior Night Friday and we just had to wait for that one special moment. Kate made that moment happen. Her goal due to was a fantastic individual effort, being there and being composed. It was just a great finish - you can?t teach that.?
The lone goal of the game came off Gordon?s right foot at the 75:51 mark. After wide midfielder Stephanie Welch intercepted a Boilermaker serve along the left sideline, the sophomore midfielder sent a long through ball that found Gordon just outside the left corner of the box. Gordon, who had gotten behind two Purdue defenders, settled the ball and sent a 15-yard blast that beat Purdue keeper Jocelyn Cavalier to the far right post. It was Gordon?s sixth goal of the season.
The freshman striker?s score was the result of some increased pressure from the Marquette attack after the intermission. The action in a slow, evenly-played first half was spent mostly in the midfield, as both teams had trouble creating chances and mounting rushes. The highlight of the opening frame was Bothwell?s snatch of a Kate Queen shot while the Marquette keeper was 10 yards off her line following a scramble after an indirect kick.
Bothwell and the Marquette defense gained momentum off of that save and carried it into the second half. After defeating #21 Missouri 5-1 this past Friday, the Boilermakers were held to only three shots and were stuck in their own end for a majority of the second half.
?I never felt like we were going to lose,? Roeders said. ?We?ve been playing some excellent defense over the second half of the season and I felt comfortable relying on that defense. We were creating some decent opportunities, so it was just a matter when we would score.?
Marquette opens play at the Conference USA Tournament on Wed., Nov. 3, when the fourth-seeded Golden Eagles take on #5 UAB in the 8 p.m. (CT) quarterfinal contest.
