Women's Soccer Moves On To Next Round

FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - The Marquette women?s soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Conference USA Championship tonight with a 2-1 win over UAB at the Cox Soccer Complex. Katherine Ward?s header in the 52nd minute proved to be the decisive goal, as the fourth-seeded Golden Eagles blanketed the potent offensive attack of the fifth-seeded Lady Blazers for the remainder of the contest.
?We?re all very pleased because we played well tonight,? Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. ?We competed as well as we have all season. It was a tough game because both teams played a physical style and made space real tight. We matched up well with them physically, though, and were able to get some decent opportunities.?
All-C-USA First team pick Kelly Roethe gave Marquette a 1-0 lead by bending in a 22-yard free kick at the 16:50 mark. The Golden Eagles protected the one-goal lead for the remainder of the opening frame.
UAB tied the match at the 48:08 mark when Katja Lerew converted a penalty kick after Marquette committed a foul in the penalty area. However, Ward netted the game-winner only minutes later, heading an Erin Morgan cross back to the far post for her seventh goal of the season. The Golden Eagles utilized the momentum from that goal to control play for the rest of the game.
?Katherine?s game-winner was beautiful,? Roeders said. ?She took a nice, high cross from Ernie and placed it perfectly back to the far post. After that we gave a sound defensive effort and actually got stronger as the game wore on.?
With the victory, Marquette improves to 13-6-2. UAB concludes its season at 10-10-1.
The Golden Eagles next play eighth-seeded Southern Miss in a semifinal contest, tomorrow at 8 p.m. (CT). Southern Miss advanced to the semis by knocking off top-seeded Saint Louis 2-1 earlier this evening. Marquette defeated Southern Miss 3-1 in the teams? regular-season meeting in Milwaukee on Oct. 24.
