FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - The Marquette women?s soccer team advanced to the Conference USA Championship game for the fourth time in as many seasons with a 6-0 victory over eighth-seeded Southern Miss tonight at the Cox Soccer Complex. Katherine Ward netted the game-winner for the second straight game, and the fourth-seeded Golden Eagles dominated play the rest of the way in improving to 14-6-2. Southern Miss ended its season with a 10-9-1 record.
?We dominated tonight,? Marquette head coach Markus Roeders said. ?We actually may not have played as well as we did last night, but we finished our chances well.?
Ward?s game-winner, her eighth goal of the season, came at the 21:50 mark of the opening frame. Anna Frisk added some first-half insurance with a goal off a Lanette Rossini cross in the 28th minute and Marquette took the 2-0 lead into the intermission.
The Golden Eagles blew the game open in the second half, as Melissa Moffatt, Kate Gordon, Ashley Spakowitz and Jenny Strachota scored in succession.
Marquette set a C-USA Tournament single-game record with six goals and 16 points and tied the single-game mark with 17 corners. Rossini tied a single-game record with two assists. The Golden Eagles have now won a season-high seven consecutive games.
?Every time (Southern Miss) got any momentum, we stopped them with a goal,? Roeders said. ?Its a good result and we got to rest some people, and its gets us back where we want to be - in the championship game again.?
After a day off, the Golden Eagles will face second-seeded UNC Charlotte in the championship game on Sat., Nov. 6, at 1:30 p.m. (CT). The 49ers qualified for the championship game after getting past #3 Houston on penalty kicks following a regulation and four overtimes that ended in a 2-2 draw. Marquette dropped a 1-0 decision to the 49ers in the teams? regular-season meeting on Oct. 15 in Charlotte.
