Wrestling Celebrates The Season With Down Time

LAST WEEK The Golden Eagles packed a lot of action into one day, with the starters competing at two dual matches and the remainder of the squad hosting the Marquette Open I on Sat., Dec. 11. Marquette?s starting lineup opened the day with a 37-3 loss at #6 Illinois in Champaign, Ill. The Golden Eagles? lone victory came courtesy of junior Peter Butville (Levittown, Pa. / Neshaminy). Ranked nationally at #20 in the 165-pound weight class, Butville upset tenth-ranked Bill Zeman 6-1 to earn Marquette?s points against the Illini.
Butville also scored a victory in Marquette?s second dual match of the day, a 26-16 loss at Eastern Illinois in Charleston, Ill. Butville pinned the Panthers? Jason Hoffman in 3:27 for one of four Golden Eagle victories during the competition. Earning a major decision at Eastern Illinois was Neil Posmer (Algonquin, Ill. / Jacobs) at 157 pounds. Also earning victories in the latter dual match were Brock Warder (Sioux City, Iowa / West) at 184 and #17 Mike Schneider (Elk Grove, Ill. / Conant) at 197.
The Golden Eagles scored no individual titles at the Marquette Open I, but did get several solid performances. Marquette earned four third-place finishes, with Dan Fell (Skokie, Ill. / Niles North) at 125, Andy Zychowicz (Perrysburg, Ohio / Perrysburg) at 141, Brad Hampton (Richfield, Wis. / Catholic Memorial) at 174 and Brian Floral (Norridge, Ill. / Ridgewood) at 197 all earning consolation titles in their weight classes.
