IOWA CITY, Iowa. - The Marquette men's track and field team earned a share of second place at the Iowa Twilight Invitational on Sat., May 1, in Iowa City, Iowa. MU accumulated 102 points, tying with Western Michigan, behind host Iowa's 191.5 and ahead of five other teams.
The Golden Eagles were once again led by their talented senior class. Terry Haley (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) broke the Marquette record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:49.54, surpassing the mark set by current MU head coach Dave Uhrich in 1982. Two-time All-American Dan Fax (West Bend, Wis./East) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the shot put with his best toss of the season, winning the event with a mark of 59-8 1/4. He also placed fourth in the discus with his best throw of the year, 173-6.
Another senior, Shawn Nielsen (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge) threw a personal-best 176-3 in the javelin to place second at the meet. That throw was the second-best in Marquette history since 1986, when the new javelin was established. Joe Ouellette (Colton, Ore./Colton) rounded out the senior performances by finishing second in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.79.
Some of Marquette's underclassmen shined at the Iowa meet as well. In the 400-meter hurdles, freshman Charles Lehman's (Bricelyn, Minn./United South Central) time of 55.90 was good for third place and tenth on MU's all-time list. His classmate, Brian Hardin (Des Moines, Iowa/Valley), ran a 48.49 in the 400 meters to move up to fifth on the Golden Eagles' top-10 list while sophomore Ken Mueller (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine) took over the tenth spot on that list, running a 48.91 to finish a place behind Hardin.
