MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Marquette men?s soccer team won held off a hard-charging DePaul Blue Demon squad in the second half and earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory this evening at Valley Fields. Mike Adrian?s goal in the game?s 62nd minute helped Marquette gets its first Conference USA win of 1999, and its third straight.
?We actually took a step back tonight because we were a little too comfortable,? Marquette head coach Steve Adlard said. ?Having said that, however, it?s a huge Conference USA victory because they come in here 2 0 (in the league) with a game plan that is obviously working. The focus is here now and we?ll see where we stand in the league soon.?
Marshall Morehead gave a Marquette a one-goal lead only 4:56 into the contest, keeping his sizzling early season going with his fifth goal in many games. The junior striker picked off a DePaul pass in the box and drilled a 16-yard blast past a flat-footed Blue Demon keeper for the 1-0 lead. Marquette controlled play for the remainder of the opening frame, with solid defensive efforts turned in by midfielders Andy Hunter and Bryan Godfrey, and defender Chad Garofola.
Adrian and goalie Greg Guglielmino played the heroes for Marquette in the second half. Adrian?s game winner, with assists to Bryan Godfrey and Sean Reti, came at the 61:49 mark and gave Marquette a two-goal cushion. The Golden Eagles would need that edge, as a spirited Blue Demon squad made continuous runs at the Marquette net throughout the second half. Shane Hudson broke through for DePaul off a misplayed clear in the 71st minute of action, but Guglielmino broke up several other strong scoring chances. All four of his saves were recorded in the second half as he went the full 90 minutes for the second consecutive game.
?It feels good,? said Adrian, who found the back of the net for the second straight game. ?It got rough there for a while because we couldn?t relieve the pressure, but (Guglielmino) came up big for us. He made some tough saves, but we can?t allow that to happen. We were fortunate to get out of here with the victory.?
Marquette's third straight win improves its mark to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in C-USA action. The loss is DePaul's first in the league and they are now 2-4, 2-1.
Marquette hits the road for a pair of nonconference games this weekend, starting at Drake on Fri., Sept. 24, at 4 p.m. (CT).
