Milwaukee -- The Marquette University volleyball returns home Tuesday (Sept. 12) evening when it plays host to intra-city rival UW-Milwaukee. Start time for the match between the Golden Eagles and Panthers is set for 7:00 p.m. at Marquette Gymnasium.
Head Coach Laura Farina and her squad show a 1-6 mark following a trip to the University of Missouri where it competed at the Tiger Invitational. The Golden Eagles' lone win of the tourney came over Morgan State in four games (11-15, 15-8, 15-10, 15-1) while they came out on the short end of decisions to Arkansas State, Texas Christian and Missouri.
The Golden Eagles start three freshmen and the trio are figuring prominently into various statistical categories. Outside hitter Ann Lopata (Glen Elly, Ill.) and middle Megan Markowski (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) rank 2-3 on the team in kills with 95 and 91, respectively. Lopata's 3.65 kills per game average paces the team while Markowski ranks as the team leader in digs (2.68 dpg). Setter Gemma Greer (Winfield, Ill.) is seeing considerable action and is averaging 9.61 assists per contest.
Farina's young squad is earning their collective stripes against some tough competition. Including tomorrow night's match against UWM, seven of the Golden Eagles' first eight opponents have a record of .500 or better. As of Sept. 10, those eight foes have a combined record of 30-18 (.625).
UW-Milwaukee, a NCAA Tournament team a year ago, is off to a good start in 2000 with a record of 5-1. UWM hosted and claimed the Powerade Panther Invitational, winning all three of its matches. Junior Laura Dallenbach, named the tourney's MVP, leads the squad with a 4.14 kills per game average and a 28.8 attack percentage.
Marquette trails in the all-time series with UW-Milwaukee by a 41-20-1 margin. Last year, the Panthers defeated MU in three games on two occasions.
