TOURNEY INFO -- The Marquette volleyball team continues the non-conference portion of its schedule this Friday and Saturday (Sept. 15-16) when it competes at the Indiana Invitational. The Golden Eagles' opening match of the tourney will be against Duke while Indiana battles Loyola Marymount in the nightcap. On Saturday, Marquette will battle Indiana (Noon) before closing out the weekend with a contest against Loyola Marymount (5:00 p.m.). All matches will be played at University Gym on the IU campus.
THE COACHES -- Marquette is directed by second-year head coach Laura Farina(Illinois, '92) who owns a two-year record of 18-20. Last season Farina directed MU to an overall record of 18-13 with the team's 58.1 winning percentage the highest since 1985. Heading into the weekend, Farina stands 11-13 in road/neutral games. Duke Head Coach Jolene Nagel (Edinboro, '83) is in her second season at the helm of the Blue Devil program and posts a school ledger of 20-16. Now in her 13th year of college coaching, she has a career slate of 224-152. Katie Weismiller (Texas-Arlington, '88) is in her eighth year as Indiana's head coach and she takes a school record of 119-110 into the Hoosier II Invitational. During her stint at IU, Weismiller has led the program to three NCAA Tournament appearances. In 10 seasons of college coaching, she has manufactured a career mark of 169-134. Steve Stratos (San Diego State, '75) is in his 11th season at LMU and claims a school and career ledger of 218-92. He has directed the Lions to seven campaigns of 20 or more wins along with five trips to the NCAA Tournament.
SERIES NOTES -- This weekend's action will mark the first time that Marquette has played any of the three teams at the Hoosier II Invitational.
THE RECORDS -- Marquette stands 1-7 following a setback at the hands of intra-city rival UW-Milwaukee on Tuesday (Sept. 12), 15-12, 10-15, 15-11, 6-15, 9-15. Duke posts a record of 7-2 following a 15-7, 15-13, 15-7 win at home over Campbell on Tuesday evening. Loyola Marymount, ranked 20th in the nation, stands 6-0 and is coming off a championship effort in the LMU Volleyball Classic last weekend. The Lions have not been extended past three games in their last four outings and have lost just three of a possible 21 games this year. Indiana is off to a quick start and heads into its tourney with a perfect 7-0 record. The Hoosiers received a scare on Tuesday (Sept. 12) evening when it was extended to five games against Indiana State. However, IU managed to come away with an 8-15, 10-15, 15-11, 15-11, 15-13 triumph over the Sycamores.
MARQUETTE TEAM NOTES - MU dished out a season-high 13 service aces in the UW-Milwaukee match ... Entering the Hoosier Invitational, Marquette is hitting 17.3 percent compared to the opposition's mark of 23.6 percent ... The Golden Eagles have been out hit in seven of their eight matches ... MU has posted two games of double-figure blocks, 11 vs. McNeese State and 10 vs. Texas Christian (Sept. 10) ... MU is averaging 2.0 blocks per game, just a shade under the opposition's mark of 2.1 per contest ... The Golden Eagles have dished out 67 service aces vs. 51 for the opposition
GOLDEN EAGLE TIDBTS -- Freshman outside hitter Ann Lopata's (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) 26 kills in the UW-Milwaukee match represented her third effort of 20 or more kills this season and is the highest for an individual MU player this year ... Lopata's 30.8 attack percentage in the UW-Milwaukee match was her second-highest total of the season ... Freshman Gemma Greer (Winfield, Ill.) doled out a personal-high 48 assists in the UW-Milwaukee match ... Greer is averaging 9.61 assists per game ... Junior Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) leads the team with seven matches of double-figure kills ... Devine paces the team with a 23.6 attack percentage, service aces with 14 and total blocks with 35 ... Freshman Megan Markowski (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) leads the squad in digs (2.73 dpg)and has registered four matches of double figures in that category ... Devine and Markowski are the two Golden Eagles to have played in all 33 of the team's games.
QUICK NOTE - Entering this weekend's Hoosier II Invitational, MU's three opponents have a combined record of 20-2.

MARQUETTE HAS FORMIDABLE SCHEDULE - The 2000 Marquette squad has already or will face a demanding schedule with a total of seven teams that participated in last season's NCAA Tournament, three from C-USA and four non-league foes. Out-of-conference opponents that the Golden Eagles will tangle with include Arkansas State (Sept. 8), UW-Milwaukee (Sept. 12), Indiana (Sept. 16) and Loyola Marymount (Sept. 16). League teams that advanced to the national tournament a year ago include Houston, Cincinnati and Louisville.
