Women's Soccer Team Looks to Remain Undefeated
9/5/2000 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
Sept. 5, 2000
Off to its best start since 1996, the Marquette women's soccer team looks to continue its winning ways. To do so, the Golden Eagles will have to do it away from the city of Milwaukee.
The season's first road trip takes Marquette to Birmingham, Ala., for the Nike UAB Classic. In its first match of the event, Marquette and host UAB will hook up for a Conference USA test. After a day of rest, the Golden Eagles return to action against Auburn in Birmingham.
LAST WEEK
Rebounding from a 1-0 deficit early in the second half, a goal and an assist from junior Stephanie Welch (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) secured a 2-1 win for the Marquette women's soccer team over UW-Milwaukee.
SCOUTING UAB
UAB has split its first three matches of the season, dropping a decision to Ohio, tying Iowa State and beating Jacksonville State. The Blazers have a busy week ahead of them as they must play three times in six days. UAB and Virginia were scheduled to play on Labor Day in Charlottesville, Va., but bad weather forced the contest to Tuesday, Sept. 5.
Maile Kruse and Jessica Samulski each have a goal on the season. Kruse leads the squad with five shots on goal in the three matches. UAB relies on keeper Jen Braly to keep them in matches. She has 13 saves this season.
Last time: Marquette prevailed, 2-1, on Nov. 3, 1999. Series History: Marquette leads, 5-1-0.
SCOUTING AUBURN
Auburn sits at 3-1 on the season. They scored 19 goals in the first two matches (11-0 win over Alabama A&M, 8-0 win over Nicholls State). Since the high goal output, the Tigers won in overtime over C-USA's Charlotte, 3-2. The Tigers lost their first of the season, a 3-1 decision to Dayton.
Junior forward Tammy Waine is Auburn's biggest offensive threat. She currently has eight goals on the season (three vs. Alabama A&M, two vs. Nicholls State and three vs. Charlotte). The question for Auburn now is its defense after allowing five goals in the last three full halves of soccer.
Series History: First meeting.
HEAD COACH MARKUS ROEDERS
Markus Roeders has a 64-20-9 (.737) record in his fifth season as head coach at Marquette. His 1999 squad became the first in school history to advance to the NCAA Tournament. There, the Golden Eagles won the first round contest, 3-2, over Missouri before falling to Clemson, 1-0. He guided the 1999 team to a Conference USA Tournament championship prior to the NCAA Tournament bid.
Roeders has led Marquette to 14 wins or more in each of his four previous season. He directed the Golden Eagles to a pair of regular-season C-USA titles in 1996 and 1997, and he led Marquette to appearances in the C-USA title game in each of his four seasons. Roeders begins his second year as a member of the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Committee. A 1990 graduate of UNC-Asheville, Roeders earned the 1996 C-USA Coach of the Year Award. Prior to taking over the reigns of the women's program, Roeders served for two seasons as an assistant coach for the Marquette men's team under his collegiate coach, Steve Adlard. Roeders played his final two seasons at UNC-Asheville and was team captain as a senior. He is assisted by Frank Pelaez and Dan Holcomb.
IN THE POLLS
The Marquette women's soccer team, off to a 3-0-0 start, received its first national ranking of the season. The Golden Eagles, who received votes in the preseason National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, are ranked 23rd by the coaches.
"It's nice to be ranked," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We're off to a good start, but we still have room for improvement."
Marquette is the only C-USA school to be in the top-25.
In the Soccer Buzz rankings, the Golden Eagles are currently unranked, but are receiving votes.
Regionally, Marquette is ranked third in the NSCAA Great Lakes Region top-10. The Golden Eagles trail Notre Dame (ranked fourth nationally) and Kentucky (ranked 16th nationally).

SHARE THE WEALTH
With six goals on the season and three wins, the Marquette women's soccer team is doing a fine job of keeping everyone happy. Six different players have the six goals this season -- Katherine Ward, Kate Gordon, Jill Vendetti, Rhegan Hyypio, Stephanie Welch, and Ashley Spakowitz.
Only two players, Gordon and Welch, have recorded more than one combined goal or assist. Welch and Gordon are tied for the team lead in points with four (goal, two assists). Tournament Champions
The Marquette women's soccer team began the season in victorious fashion, winning both matches at the 2000 Verizon Wireless Milwaukee Cup. By defeating Tennessee and Wisconsin, the Golden Eagles were the only squad to win two matches. UW-Milwaukee and Wisconsin each went 1-1, while Tennessee finished at 0-2.
As a result of the success at the tournament, four Marquette players earned bids on the all-tournament team. Mo Bothwell was the all-tournament goal-keeper for her one-goal effort for the tournament. Kate Gordon logged a goal and a pair of assists to be the tournament's highest point scorer with four. That effort earned her a spot on the all-tournament team. Katherine Ward was named to the all tournament team for her match-winning goal against Tennessee and all-around attacking efforts. Rhegan Hyypio, was not only named to the all-tournament team, but was honored with the tag as the tournament's Defensive MVP. Hyypio scored the game winner against Wisconsin and was the leader of the Marquette defensive effort which allowed just one goal.

HYYPIO NAMED PRESEASON ALL-C-USA
Rhegan Hyypio was named to the preseason All-Conference USA team as voted on by the league's coaches. The senior leader of the Marquette defense has two previous post-season C-USA credits to her resume. As a junior, Hyypio was named second team all-conference. Following a stellar sophomore season, Hyypio was tagged as the best defender in all of Conference USA in addition to her first-team all-C-USA status. As a freshman, Hyypio was named the MVP of the Conference USA post-season tournament and was named to the all-Freshman team.
EAGLES FOLLOW SAINT LOUIS AS FAVORITE
Conference USA coaches have selected Saint Louis as the favorite to win the league in 2000, but Marquette is a close second according to the league. The expectations of the coaches are similar to the final standings of 1999. The league regular-season champion in 1999, Saint Louis is expected to repeat in that role. Tournament champion and regular-season runner-up Marquette is favored to be second again. Coaches have Charlotte and Houston, who tied Marquette for second last year, challenging the front runners.
