MILWAUKEE - Saint Louis defender Erin Schweyte scored in the fourth minute of the match and the Billikens (7-7-1, 4-4-1 C-USA) packed in defensively for the rest of the contest to shutout Marquette, 1-0.
Schweyte stood over a corner kick early in the match and bent it towards the Marquette net. Marquette goal keeper Ashleigh Koenig (Naperville, Ill.) put her hands on the ball, but was unable to stop it as it crossed the goal line.
The Golden Eagles (11-4, 7-2 C-USA) controlled the attack in the second half as the Billikens played mostly on defense. Marquette launched 10 shots in the second half compared to the Billikens' one. SLU goal keeper Meghann Burke was up to the challenge, making four of her five saves in the second half.
"We always talk about putting 90 minutes of soccer together. Today, we were only able to put 45 minutes of good soccer together," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We have got to get on track and focus for our next match."
Burke's lone save in the first half was a point-blank shot off the foot of sophomore midfielder Carolyn Klopp (Glendale, Wis.). Burke made a diving deflection to preserve the SLU shutout.
The loss marks the first time that MU has dropped a home conference contest since Oct. 16, 1998. The Golden Eagles had not lost a conference bout in 13 matches, dating back to a 2-1 loss to South Florida. The shutout marks the first time MU hasn't scored since a 4-0 loss to Texas A&M on Nov. 12, 2000, in the NCAA Tournament last season.
The Golden Eagles continue their season on Sunday, Oct. 28 with a match at Wisconsin. Start time is 3 p.m.
