Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team won its third straight and ninth match in its last 11 outings Friday evening by defeating the Tigers of Memphis in three games. The Golden Eagles raised their overall record to 14-8, 6-4 in C-USA, following a 30-23, 30-25, 30-22 decision. The loss dropped Memphis' record to 17-6 overall, 5-6 in Conference action.
Senior Vesna Grbavac (Palatine, Ill.) led the Marquette attack with a team-high 14 kills while recording a season-high 43.8 attack percentage (14-0--32). Freshman Jennifer Amobi (Silver Springs, Mary.) and senior Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) each totaled 10 kills with Devine also registering five total blocks. Freshman Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) chalked up seven attacks and finished with a 53.8 hitting percentage (7-0--13).
Leading the Memphis effort was senior outside hitter Adrianne Edmonds with 17 kills and six digs.
For the match, Marquette compiled a 35.7 hitting percentage (49-9--112), tying the team's season high, compared to the Memphis mark of 20.3 percent (46-21--123). Both teams recorded 43 digs while Marquette enjoyed a 10-7 edge in total blocks.
Marquette returns to action on Saturday evening (Oct. 27) with a home match against Saint Louis at the MU Gym starting at 6:00 p.m.
