Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team posted a come-from-behind win at Illinois-Chicago on Wednesday evening, topping the Flames in five games. The Golden Eagles raised their record to 7-6 following a 25-30, 30-28, 19-30, 30-16, 15-11 decision. The loss dropped UIC's mark to 5-8.
Leading the way for Marquette was senior Vesna Grbavac who finished with a season-high 26 kills en route to a 39.2 attack percentage (26-6-51). Grbavac also tied sophomore Megan Markowski (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) for the team's lead in digs with 13. Junior Danielle Hagen (Milwaukee) was the other MU player to finish in double digits in kills with 10 while also contributing 10 digs and three service aces.
For the match, Marquette finished with a 21.1 hitting percentage compared to UIC's mark of 16.7 percent. In games four and five of the match, Marquette posted a combined 37.5 attack percentage (23-5--48) while holding the Flames to zero percent (15-15--53).
"Our blocking picked up in games four and five, plus we served strong which made their offense predictable," said Marquette Head Coach Laura Farina. "We were more effective in putting the ball down in those last two games and had just five hitting errors over that stretch. Keeping the errors to a minimum are crucial in a rally-scoring format."
Marquette returns to C-USA action this Friday (Oct. 5) when it hosts East Carolina starting at 7:00 p.m., at the Marquette Gym.
