ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Marquette head coach Terri Mitchell won her 100th career game, all at Marquette, in a 88-50 win over Alaska Anchorage in the consolation game of the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. The Golden Eagles win was their first of the season, improving to 1-2. Alaska falls to 1-3.
Mitchell becomes just the second coach in Marquette women's basketball history to win 100 games, joining legendary coach Tat Shiely who won 111 women's basketball games for MU. Mitchell is 100-50 in her six year Marquette career. She is the all time winningest coach in Marquette history based on percentage at 66.7 percent. She trails Shiely in victories by 12 to become the all-time winningest coach in terms of victories.
Mitchell's career has been marked by success. Under her leadership, Marquette has won 20 games on four occasions, won the regular season Conference USA title two times and has advanced to the NCAA Tournament four times.
"The 100 win milestone begins and ends with the players," head coach Terri Mitchell said. "I have a great staff and great players. We all have great memories of all 100 wins."
During the contest, it was a balanced scoring attack for Marquette. Freshman Katie Alsdurf (Forest Lake, Minn.) led all MU scorers with 12 points, junior forward Rachel Klug (Cedar Grove, Wis.) scored 12 as well. Freshman forward Lesley Juedes (Ripon, Wis.), sophomore Kelly Schwerman (Waukesha, Wis.) and senior center Kylee Bogott all scored 11. All but one MU player scored in the game as the Golden Eagles coasted to the large win. Jen Stoddard led the Seawolves with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
"Today was an important day for us," Mitchell said. "It was not just about winning, but it was about getting back on the right page."
Marquette got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 44-20 lead over the Seawolves by the break. Alsdurf led the Golden Eagles with 10 at the break. In the first 20 minutes, 10 of the 12 Marquette players had found the scoring column.
The game was never in serious doubt. Alaska kept the contest close for the first four minutes, trailing 8-7. But the Seawolves went cold and Marquette had its best shooting half of the season to race out to the 24 point margin. Alaska was able to score only eight points over a six minute span as MU expanded the lead.
The Golden Eagles return to action with a contest on Tuesday, Nov. 27 against Wis.-Milwaukee at the Klotsche Center.
