The Marquette women's basketball team defeated Dayton in convincing fashion Sunday afternoon at Al McGuire Court at the Bradley Center 91-63. It was Marquette's highest offensive output of the season.
The Golden Eagles came out strong shooting a blistering 67 percent in the first half as they took a 55-22 lead at the half. Junior Rachel Klug led all scorers in the game with 23 points in just 20 minutes of action. It was Klug's seventh straight game in double figures and her highest output of the season.
"The lead gave us confidence, we knew we were ahead and felt comfortable shooting," said Klug. "Every game we are learning more and more. Our experience with our tough schedule is helping us out. I feel more comfortable this year than in the past, people have confidence in me and I have more confidence in myself."
"Rachel is going to continue to score like that," said head coach Terri Mitchell. "I'm so proud of her, she should be out on the speaking circuit talking to athletes how it is like to sit the bench as a freshman, fight for a spot as a sophomore and then become a starter and the leading scorer on a team."
Marquette ended up shooting 57 percent (35-61) for the game, the highest percentage all season and the most field goals the Golden Eagles have made all season. Marquette also set a season high for highest free throw percentage 16-18 (88.9 %) and tied a season mark with 23 assists led by sophomore Crystal Weaver who had six.
"We certainly need this kind of game to give us confidence offensively," said Mitchell. Our defense continues to get stronger, but I feel our offense needs to get stronger."
The second half saw Dayton open the half on a 7-2 run and saw Marquette called for five fouls in the first three and a half minutes of the second half. The Golden Eagles responded and the Flyers never came closer than 20 in the second half.
Freshman Katie Alsdurf had her third consecutive game in double figures as she finished with a career high 19 points on 8-12 shooting to help the Golden Eagles improve to 4-5 on the season.
Marquette now has a three game winning streak at Al McGuire Court dating back to last season and a two game winning streak overall. The Golden Eagles play their next two opponents on the road, a Dec. 19 date with Arkansas State and a Dec. 22 match-up against Notre Dame.
