Marquette Grapplers Finish 17th at Wheaton Invitational

Milwaukee -- The Marquette wrestling team finished 17th out of 26 teams at the Wheaton Invitational this weekend. Taking home first-place honors was UW-Lacrosse with 189.5 points while Missouri Valley finished runner-up with 127.5 points. Rounding out the top five were Lindenwood (92.5 pts.), Wisconsin-Parkside (90.0 pts) and Chicago (87.5 pts.).
Turning in a fine performance for the Golden Eagles over the weekend was freshman Phil Bronsteatter (Wausau) who finished in third place at 141 pounds, compiling a 5-1 record over the two-days tournament, Bronsteatter got off to a fine start, defeating No. 1 seed Luke Christian of Missouri Valley, 16-12, in his first match. In the second round, he took on Jeff Jezuit of Chicago and defeated him by an 8-5 margin. Bronsteatter fell short of advancing to the semifinal round when he came out on the short end of a tough 6-5 decision to Todd Mullett of Manchester. He was able to regroup and posted a pair of wins before defeating Craig Kiewitter of Wisconsin-Parkside, 8-2, in the match for third place.
Senior Peter Butville (Neshaminy, Penn.) claimed sixth place in the 165-pound division posting wins over Nate Lukanich of Chicago (14-2), Andy Gerts of Upper Iowa (11-4) and Hiram Haysinger of Mount St. Joseph (11-9).
