Milwaukee - Marquette senior Brian Wardle (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) has been selected as a first-team member to the 2000-01 All-C-USA Basketball Team. The team was comprised by a vote of the league's coaches and media. With his selection, Wardle becomes the first Marquette player ever to land a first-team berth to the conference's all-league team. Wardle garnered second-team acclaim last year.
The 6-foot-5 Wardle heads into the C-USA Tournament this Wednesday as the league's No. 3 scorer with an 18.8 points per game average and finished the conference portion of the schedule with a 19.8 per-game effort, also good for the No. 3 spot. A double-figure scorer in 25 of Marquette's 27 games this season, Wardle has registered 13 performances of 20 or more points including a season-high 32 points against Southern Miss (Jan. 30). In league games, Wardle stood fourth in three-point field goals per game (2.50 tpg), eighth in three-point field goal percentage (.388) and sixth in free throw percentage (.839).
Wardle, who is No. 5 on Marquette's and No. 2 on C-USA's all-time scoring list with 1,653 points, has led the Golden Eagles in scoring in 16 games during this season and has 11 outings of three or more three-point field goals. Career-wise, he ranks fifth at Marquette in three-point field goals (192), fourth in trey attempts (542) and sixth in free throw percentage (.808). His 316 points in C-USA tilts established a Marquette seasonal record, bettering his previous mark of 271 set a year ago.
Junior Cordell Henry was a third-team pick to the All-C-USA Team, marking his first appearance on the conference's all-star team. The 5-foot-10 Henry concluded the regular season second on the team and 19th among conference performers in scoring in overall games with a 13.0 points per game mark. In league affairs, his 14.5 per-game average placed him 11th on the conference chart and he finished fourth in free throw shooting percentage (.857), third in assists (5.06 apg), eighth in steals (1.44 spg) and second in assist/turnover ratio (+1.98).
A double-figure scorer in 16 games in 2000-01, Henry has six games of 20 or more points to his credit including a career-high of 28 vs. Charlotte (Jan. 20). He turned in a pair of double-digit games in assists - a career-high 11 vs. Tulane (Jan. 27) and 10 against DePaul (Feb. 22).
Marquette, 14-13, opens the C-USA Tournament against Tulane on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. The winner of that game advances to the quarterfinal round on Thursday against Memphis.
