Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team notched its first win of the year early this afternoon with a three-game win over the University of Portland, 30-21, 30-27, 30-24, in the Pocatello Hotel Labor Day Classic hosted by Idaho State University. The win boosts MU's record to 1-1 while Portland falls to 0-2.
Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was senior outside hitter Vesna Grbavac, who posted a team-high 17 kills while hitting a solid 47.1 percent for the contest (17-1--34). Senior Mehgan Devine (Harris, Minn.) continued her strong play in the tournament, finishing with 16 kills and eight digs. Freshman Jennifer Amobi (Silver Springs, Mary.) turned in her second straight match of double-figure kills by recorded 10 successful attacks. Leading the squad's defensive effort was senior Tarah Beyer (Rockford, Ill.) with nine digs.
Marquette finished with a fine 32.0 attack percentage (58-18--125), the best effort by the Golden Eagles since Nov. 14, 1999, while holding the Pilots to 17.1 percent (41-22--111). Included in the Golden Eagles' attack mark was an astounding effort of 48.5 percent (20-4--33) in the third and final game.
Marquette will close out it participation in the tournament this evening with a bout against host Idaho State.
