MILWAUKEE - Marquette jumped out to a 3-0 lead before holding on to defeat Memphis, 3-2, in a women's soccer contest at Valley Fields on September 23. Marquette remains undefeated in Conference USA play at 2-0. The Golden Eagles are 6-1 overall. Memphis is 2-4-1 overall and is 0-2 in conference play.
Marquette scored first on an impressive goal from senior Jenny Strachota (Milwaukee, Wis.). She struck a header from 12 yards out into the net, scoring her third goal of the year. Sophomore midfielder Kristen Jensen (Shorewood, Ill.) placed a crossing pass directly to the head of Strachota on the assist.
"In the game, it just comes down to wanting it more," Strachota said. "We've been coming through on a lot of our chances recently because we do want it more."
Junior forward Kate Gordon (Sioux City, Iowa) scored her third of the season in the 35th minute. She scored on an unassisted goal after forcing a turnover a midfield and then sprinted past the Tigers' defense. She was able to push the ball past Memphis goalkeeper Katarina Wicksell.
Five minutes after halftime, Marquette scored its third goal on a penalty kick from Jensen for her first goal of the year. Junior forward Erin Maysent (Ames, Iowa) was taken down inside the penalty area to force the free kick.
Memphis got on the board with two goals from Rebecca Sparrow. She scored in the 78th minute past backup Marquette goalkeeper Katie Bissen (Maple Grove, Minn.). Sparrow's shot trickled past Bissen who initially stopped the ball, but its momentum carried it slowly into the net. Sparrow scored again with 16 seconds left in the contest as Amy Ciezki started a play off a turnover. Sparrow put the ball into the upper corner past Bissen to cut the Marquette lead to 3-2.
"I thought we had a solid game today." said head coach Markus Roeders. "We didn't give up too many chances until the last 10 to 15 minutes when we started playing more players. It was a good thing that everyone who could play got to get some experience."
The Golden Eagles return to action with the first of three road contests. Marquette matches up with TCU at Garvey-Rosenthal Soccer Stadium in Fort Worth on September 28. The match starts at 3 p.m.
