The Marquette women's basketball team continued their winning streak to four games Sunday afternoon with a 77-61 victory over Memphis at Al McGuire Court at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee.
Marquette's balanced scoring attack included four players in double figures. Junior Rashida Gales and senior Sarah Zawodny led the way with 12 points each. Zawodny's 12 points were a season high and she also grabbed a season high 11 rebounds.
"Of course it feels good to do well individually, but it feels better to get the win," said Zawodny. "We had the lead and gave it up a little, but managed to hold on for the win."
"It was great for her to have a double-double," said head coach Terri Mitchell. "Certainly we know she is capable to do that."
Junior center Shannon Hamp did as much as she could do try and beat the Golden Eagles single-handedly, scoring 25 points and grabbing ten rebounds. But that wasn't enough for Marquette's numerous offensive weapons that included freshman Katie Alsdurf's eleven points and senior Kristi Johnson's ten.
Marquette broke the game open with a fast start and saw their lead grow to 17 points in the first half. The Golden Eagles took a comfortable 43-26 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Memphis didn't give up and managed to the lead under ten with less than four minutes left behind Hamp's strong play in the post.
"After our great start we came out a little too relaxed in the second half," said Alsdurf. Marquette regained control of the game despite being without junior leading scorer Rachel Klug who left the game with an ankle injury with ten minutes to go in the second half.
"It was the same ankle she sprained earlier," said I will have to find out more, but hopefully she will be ready to play on Friday."
Memphis shot 29.6 percent (21-71) in the game and failed to connect on all eleven three point attempts.
"I thought we had a lot of good looks in the game today," said Memphis head coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "We kept digging ourselves a deeper hole in the first half and couldn't seem to turn the game around in the second half."
Johnson's three pointer with 1:58 left made the score 70-57 and put the Tigers away for good. Marquette improved to 11-7 overall and 4-1 in Conference USA with the win. Memphis dropped to 8-10 overall and 2-3 in C-USA.
The Golden Eagles will continue their season with a Jan. 25 match-up against C-USA opponent Southern Miss. The action will tip-off at 7 p.m. at the U.S. Cellular Arena.
