Men's Tennis Scorching in Season Opener

The Marquette men's tennis team equaled their women rivals for season openers, defeating the University of Illinois-Chicago 7-0.
Playing from the No. 1 position, sophomore Raj Gill (Ascot, England/Millfield School) beat UIC's Nick Bodmer 6-0, 6-1. He paired up with teammate junior Justin Holsen (Milwaukee, Wis.) to defeat the duo of Bodmer and Wade Clark, 8-2. Clark fell victim to Holsen in singles action as well, losing 6-0, 6-2.
Team newcomer sophomore Troy Delmege (Australia), playing in the No. 2 position, kicked of his first match with a bang, defeating Ken Howrey 6-3, 2-6, 7-3. He teamed up with junior Kent Davies (Waukesha, Wis./South) to defeat the Flames' tandem of Karydakes and Amol Desai 8-4. In singles action, Davies defeated Desai from the No. 4 spot, 6-0, 6-0.
In only their second semester at Marquette, sophomore Creighton Macy (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) and freshman Joe Bates (Ft. Atkinson, Wis./Ft. Atkinson) both had strong starts. In the No. 6 position, Macy overpowered Neil Ahluwalia (6-0, 6-0). From the No. 5 position Bates defeated Omar Husain (6-3,6-1). As a duo, Bates and Macy combined to thrash Howrey and Husain 8-1.
The Golden Eagles will take the court again Friday, against Eastern Illinois, at Marquette's Helfaer Tennis Stadium at 4 p.m.
